Hi Matt, I went through once the White paper. Quite good. I noted two small things in the last section. 1) Life stage. In many amphibians, mortality is highest during metamorphosis.... I think it is not really clear that metamorphic stages is the most susceptible. This could for some species but not for others. So it would better to say that larval stages including metamorphic animals are the most susceptible. Or something like this. 2)Developed immunity. I think it means Acquired immunity (or adaptive). In this section, it could be good to mention something about grogs. Study in Xenopus also suggests that adult frogs can generate long lasting immunological memory involving protective antibodies (Gantress et al., 2003; Maniero et al., 2006). Please let me know if you are willing to review the IWRC white paper or deliver a presentation at their symposium. The IWRC also expressed interested in endorsing the GRC's mission to improve collaborations among scientists and veterinarians conducting research on ranaviruses or diagnosing cases of ranaviral disease. Please let me know if you have any objections to this endorsement. All the Best, Matt ______________________________________________________________ Matthew J. Yes, I would very much like GRC scientists to take a look at my ranavirus paper and comment on it. I'm most interested in learning about any errors I've made, and about any improvements in my advice to rehabbers at the end of the paper. The paper would benefit from some more photos that could guide rehabbers in what to look for. Comments can be made directly at the bottom of the ranavirus paper at http://davidstang.com/?p=54 <http://davidstang.com/?p=54> , or a reviewer can write me directly at this email address. The IWRC supports the mission of the GRC, and I believe our Board would be pleased to endorse the GRC. I believe our Executive Director, Kai Williams, may be sending you a letter to this effect. I want to invite you or another GRC scientist to consider a presentation at our 2012 IWRC Symposium. You can learn more about it here <http://theiwrc.org/symposium/2012-symposium> , including details on how to submit a paper. We are working on creating a webinar on infectious diseases, will certainly be including a ranavirus component in it, and would appreciate GRC's support in this project, perhaps by contributing to the materials we develop or in reviewing those materials. But apart from the webinar, we are interested in sharing with our members any educational materials on ranavirus that your members might offer. Your next conference is of interest to me and likely many of our members. As we get closer to it, we might help promote it to our members through our mailings and web site. We can work those details out later. I have an ongoing interest in zoogeography, including the distribution of wildlife diseases. If the early rounds of our collaboration are successful, perhaps we can explore how I or the IWRC can contribute to helping track the distribution of ranavirus. Indeed, the GRC is interested in collaborating with the IWRC to improve understanding of the global distribution and impact of ranaviruses. If interested, I can send a request to the GRC scientists to provide a critique of your white paper. We also would be happy to work with IWRC to identify or create outreach education resources on ranaviruses. The GRC also welcomes endorsement by conservation organizations that support its mission to facilitate collaboration of scientists and veterinarians that are studying ranaviruses or ranaviral disease. As a newly formed consortium, the IWRC would be the first organization to endorse the GRC. A letter on organization letterhead indicating support of the GRC's mission and interest in future collaboration is all that is currently required to be an endorsing organization. Another way to support the GRC is through becoming a sponsor of the biennial International Symposium on Ranaviruses. The next symposium will be in 2013 and held concurrently with the International Conference of the Wildlife Disease Association (http://www.ranavirus.com <http://www.ranavirus.com> ). Planning committees are formed and we are in the process of drafting the agenda and soliciting support from sponsors. I attached a proposal explaining the mission of the symposium for IWRC's review to determine if sponsorship is an interest. The First International Symposium on Ranaviruses was a major success with 23 scientists from 9 countries participating and support from 12 sponsors. Details about the first symposium along with resources that were produced are available at: http://fwf.ag.utk.edu/mgray/ranavirus/2011Ranavirus.htm <http://fwf.ag.utk.edu/mgray/ranavirus/2011Ranavirus.htm> . If the IWRC is interested in becoming a sponsor, please let me know and we can discuss details. Thank you very much for contacting the GRC and your interest in improving the understanding of ranaviruses. We look forward to the possibility of future collaborations. As an organization, our mission is to provide science-based education and resources to wildlife rehabilitators and the public to promote wildlife conservation and welfare. We view ranavirus as a serious threat to wildlife welfare, and want to do what we can to minimize its impact. We would like to explore joining the GRC in some way. We have drafted an overview white paper on ranaviruses for our members. This first draft is currently posted here <http://davidstang.com/?p=54> , but we will be revising it in the coming weeks to make it more accurate and more suitable for our members, and posting it on our website here <http://TheIWRC.org> . Any input from GRC members would be appreciated. We intend to create a webinar on the topic, to serve our common need for public education. For that, we would very much appreciate any images and expertise that GRC members can provide. Our Board looks forward to hearing from you.
