Subject: [aclcp-l] Digital Services Librarian posting, Dickinson

Digital Services Librarian

Waidner-Spahr Library

Dickinson College

Carlisle, PA

Dickinson College Library, part of a merged Library & Information Services division, seeks an innovative service-driven librarian to join us in shaping services and collections for 21st century learners, educators, and scholars.  The Digital Services Librarian (DSL) leads in identifying, articulating, and incorporating innovative uses of technology in all areas of library services, particularly those incorporating new and emerging technologies in higher education.  The ideal candidate works not only to develop projects and approaches that serve all areas of the library, but also demonstrates the ability to implement resources, to teach their uses to others who may be less technically oriented, to assess their effectiveness, and to adapt as needed based on assessment results.  The DSL also serves as a liaison, providing information literacy instruction and collection development support to assigned academic departments and First Year Seminars, and provides reference services including some evening and weekend shifts.

Of necessity, this role requires someone who is a strong collaborator and an effective communicator, who is able to work effectively with librarians, information technology professionals, faculty, students, and staff.  This position directly supports four core areas of library digital services that engage multiple aspects of campus teaching and learning:

Discovery – by evaluating, implementing, and improving online research tools including the library’s database finder, discovery service, journal locator, and OPAC.

Access – by providing technical support for delivery of digital content including unique archival material.

Presentation – by creating attractive and functional interfaces for the presentation of library materials on the Internet.

Learning – by providing, both virtually and in person, clear and effective information literacy instruction, via mechanisms including online tutorials and active learning classroom techniques.

The ideal candidate is proactive in recommending improvements in library services and resource delivery, and demonstrates effective leadership skills on project teams.  One to three years of relevant professional level experience is highly desired.

Dickinson College, chartered in 1783, is a highly selective, private liberal-arts college known for its innovative curriculum. Its mission is to offer students a useful education in the arts and sciences that will prepare them for lives as engaged citizens and leaders. We serve 2,400 undergraduates at our 180-acre residential campus.  The college offers 42 majors with an emphasis on a global perspective, has 40 study-abroad programs in 24 countries on six continents, and offers 13 modern languages.

For a list of specific qualifications and to apply online visit http://jobs.dickinson.edu/.  Please include a cover letter describing your qualifications for the position, curriculum vitae, contact information for three professional references, and a 2-4 page statement describing how you envision personally contributing to each of the four core areas of digital library services.  Your statement should include concrete examples of your personal experience relevant to one or more of the core areas. Paper applications will not be accepted, and incomplete applications will not be reviewed.  Review of applications will begin on April 15, 2012 and will continue until the position is filled.

Dickinson College is located in the historic borough of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, which offers excellent quality of life, affordable housing, fall color, and easy access to Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Baltimore and other major east coast cities.
