Position Summary

Coordinate reference services at all library sites; provide library reference services and instruction for the college community  

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

-Develop, implement, and evaluate department mission, goals and objectives, policies and procedures
-Schedule, organize, and manage departmental staffing and work assignments; train and supervise reference department staff involving use of print materials, electronic databases, Internet resources, and library policies and procedures
-Provide reference and information services to students, faculty, administration, staff, and community users of the library
-Prepare classroom presentations and instructional materials in print, electronic, and web formats; teach classes involving library skills and research methods in the electronic classroom; conduct individual assistance as needed; evaluate instructional materials and methods for effectiveness
-Prepare research and reference tools in print, electronic, and web formats
-Evaluate print materials, electronic databases, and Internet resources for inclusion in the library's print and electronic collections; inventory and evaluate current library holdings; weed outdated materials
-Maintain communication network with all library sites
-Compile statistical data regarding reference services and prepare reports
-Train and supervise student workers assigned to the reference area
-Promote, support, and participate in student recruitment and retention efforts
-Perform other job-related duties as assigned  

Required Qualifications

-Education and training: Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university
-Work Experience: Two years full-time experience including use of computers, Internet and electronic database searching and supervisory experience  

Preferred Qualifications:

Prefer: Work experience in reference section of an academic library; experience in creating web pages; experience teaching traditional and electronic library resources  

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Work Characteristics

-Knowledge: Knowledge of traditional reference sources and techniques, computer technology, online databases, and the Internet; supervisory principles and methods
-Skills: Oral and written communication skills consistent with providing services associated with reference, research, and retrieval of information from print and computer resources; interpersonal skills consistent with providing services to the public, including flexibility, enthusiasm, confidentiality, and open-mindedness and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships in a collaborative environment
-Abilities: Ability to use traditional reference sources, computer technology, integrated library systems online databases, and the Internet
