--- UT Knoxville begins a full week of commencement ceremonies and celebrations on Wednesday, May 9. More than 3,600 undergraduate and graduate students will receive degrees this spring.

--- Next week, the first class of Haslam Scholars will graduate from UT Knoxville. These students arrived at UT four years ago as part of the inaugural class of the Haslam Scholars Program, a premier four-year scholarship program created with generous contributions from Jimmy and Dee Haslam and Jim and Natalie Haslam.

--- Ken Lowe, chairman, president, and CEO of Scripps Networks Interactive Inc., will deliver the commencement address for the College of Communication and Information. Lowe will address graduates and their families at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, May 10, in Thompson-Boling Assembly Center and Arena.

--- Do you know what to do when a tornado warning is issued for areas that include our campus? The university will send a UT Alert text message and e-mail to the campus community when the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning for areas that include our campus. If the message directs you to shelter in place, please take the steps listed at safety.utk.edu.

--- UT senior Lauren Wurth spent the fall 2010 semester studying at Swansea University in Wales and came home completely enamored with the United Kingdom and all the things she experienced across the pond. When she heard about the Friendship Program through UT's International House, she thought it might give her the opportunity to befriend international students about to have the same experience she had.

--- A video of a German garden gnome decked out in Big Orange attire has won a national first-place prize for Bernadette Kolp, a freshman nursing major. Kolp is one of five national winners in the "Do Deutsch" German Olympiad sponsored by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the Ready for the World Initiative, and the German Embassy to the United States.

--- A desire to improve learning and foster more student interaction is driving the renovations of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building. The work is already under way and will kick into high gear once the spring semester ends. It will continue through the summer.

--- In its ongoing efforts to make the college application process easier, UT Knoxville has joined Common Application, a service that allows students to fill out a single document to apply for admission at more than 450 public and private universities across the United States. First-time entering freshmen applying for admission to UT for the fall of 2013 will be the first to use Common Application.

--- The Graduate School of Education will present a community screening of the feature-length documentary "American Teacher" at 7:00 p.m. tonight at the Clarence Brown Theatre. A brief panel discussion will follow the viewing. The event is free and open to anyone interested in learning more about the challenges of public education and the daily realities teachers face.

--- Registration is now open for the 9th annual Run for Clean Air, a 5k run/walk that serves as an air quality awareness event for East Tennessee and a fundraiser for the East Tennessee Clean Fuels Coalition. The race will feature an alternative fuel vehicle showcase, a wide variety of awards and door prizes, and more. The race is at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, May 12, on Cherokee Boulevard in Knoxville.
