Much of the current understanding of serendipity has derived from studying the world of science, with discoveries such as penicillin and x-rays. However, chance encounters may not be confined to scientific
findings; opportunistic discovery of information can lead to new insights and innovation at personal, organizational and discipline levels. The Workshop comprises an international group of researchers who study the chance discovery of information:
