Is your library ready to go mobile? Librarians are well aware that there is a growing need to provide information and services to patrons on their mobile devices. However, there are a plethora of options for a library’s mobile presence. This course will introduce different approaches to creating a mobile library interface including a mobile stylesheet, mobile website, mobile app, along with proprietary options. We will review why you might select one or another for your organization depending on your local needs.

Class participants will build both a mobile stylesheet and mobile website that can work with their Library’s current website. We will also cover methods for testing these mobile interfaces, even if you don’t own a smart phone.

Pre-requisites: basic knowledge of HTML, basic knowledge of CSS, basic familiarity with FTP (uploading files to the Web)

Recommended: Personal or institutional webspace to facilitate testing mobile site and to share work with instructor.

Instructor:  Amy Deschenes is the Library Technology Specialist at the Simmons College Library. She has been involved with library technology projects including website redesign, mobile web and app development, and virtual reference.
