The School of Library, Archival and Information Studies, The iSchool at The University of British Columbia in Vancouver is pleased to announce a number of recent successes by new faculty, alumni and current students.

Aaron Loehrlein has formally submitted his dissertation, entitled "Priming Effects Associated with the Hierarchical Levels of Classification Systems" to the University of Indiana Bloomington after defending in January. He will be conferred his doctorate at the Spring Commencement Ceremony in Indiana in June, and holds the rank of Assistant Professor at UBC.
Rafa Absar defended her dissertation, entitled "Enhancing Navigation using Auditory Feedback: A Case Study of a Hierarchical Information Visualization System", at Montréal's McGill University last month. She is currently making minor revisions, and expects to be conferred her doctorate at Spring Convocation at McGill in June. She holds a 12-month Lecturer position at the iSchool, for a leave replacement.
Thesis Analyses Impact of Horn Book Reviews.

Among the students, Master of Arts in Children's Literature candidate Kay Weisman has successfully defended her master's thesis, titled "Shaping the Children's Literature Canon: An Analysis of the Editorials from the Horn Book Magazine, 1924 - 2009." Her supervisor for the thesis is SLAIS Professor Judith Saltman, and committee members were Theresa Rogers, Professor with the UBC Language and Literacy Education Department and Gail Edwards of Douglas College.  Kay will be conferred the MA degree at the May 2012 convocation ceremony.

Alumna Adrienne Lai, who completed a Dual Master of Archival Studies and Master of Library and Information Studies,  has been named as one of three recipients of the ProQuestion Innovation in College Librarianship Award. Presented by the College Libraries Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries, the award honours "innovation in their work with undergraduates, instructors, and/or the library community." It will be presented to Adrienne and her colleagues from North Carolina State University Library , Anne Burke and Adam Rogers. The award is for their development of the NCSU Mobile Scavenger Hunt, which combines the use of the iPod Touch and the free app Evernote to create a dynamic experience for the students as they are oriented to the library and its services.

Finally, the iSchool is hosting another alumna at a lunchtime colloquium on Wednesday March 21. Elizabeth Denham is the Information and Privacy Commissioner for the province of British Columbia. A graduate of the School's Master of Archival Studies program, she was Assistant Privacy Commissioner of Canada prior to taking her current position. She will discuss the opportunities and challenges of information and data-sharing in the context of Gov 2.0.
