Archives & Special Collections Faculty

The Department of Library, Information and Media Studies (LIMS) at Chicago State 
University (CSU) invites applications for a tenure-track professor of assistant 
or associate professor ranking. The successful candidate will coordinate a new 
MLIS concentration in archives and records management, and teach courses 
primarily in this area. She/he will also teach at least one core course in the 
MLIS curriculum, and  help to create an interdisciplinary urban focused LIS 
program. The candidate is also expected to assist in fostering teaching, 
research  and service relationships with other programs in the university and 
Chicago cultural institutions. 

Required: Ph.D. in Library and Information Studies or related discipline with 
specializations in archives, records management, historical collections and/or 
cultural resource management. Priority will be given to applicants with MLIS 
from an ALA accredited program, and professional library and/or archival work 
experience. Also preferred is a strong research and teaching record appropriate 
to rank, including teaching experience in at least one of the following areas in 
the MLIS curriculum: cataloguing and classification/metadata, research methods, 
digital information management, and information services in urban communities. 

Preferred: ARMA or ACA certification and familiarity with multi-type 
institutional (library, archives, museum and government agency) networks, and 
potential for contributions to professional service, research and publication. 
Experience in supervising internship and fieldwork programs, and the ability to 
work closely with Chicago-area practitioners to secure internship and fieldwork 
positions. Demonstrated ability in design and delivery of courses in a variety 
of formats, including distance learning modes will be valued. Experience in 
grant writing and project management would be an advantage.
 
Compensation: This is a 9-month faculty appointment with a standard Illinois 
state benefit package and competitive salary commensurate with qualifications 
and experience.  Opportunities for added compensation exist for summer school 
teaching, sponsored research, and consulting. Anticipated beginning: fall 2012, 
or earlier, if feasible. 



Profile: Chicago State University is a fully accredited (NCA) urban-mission and 
minority serving institution of ca. 7000 students of whom a quarter are in 
graduate studies.  It offers 26 Masters programs and 2 professional doctorates. 
The College of Education which is accredited by NCATE is the second largest 
academic unit in the university. LIMS is an expanding program with an MLIS 
program in school librarianship, and new concentrations in urban informatics, 
telecommunications management and archives and special collections. It is in 
pre-candidacy for ALA accreditation and its faculty development is expected to 
contribute to this effort.
