Technology Tidbit
[https://itc2.utk.edu/newsletter_monthly/2012_03/technologytidbit.jpg]Clickers Enhance Classroom Engagement and Promote Agile Teaching

Using clickers, or "personal response devices," allows everyone to become more active and engaging within the class. Beyond taking attendance, clickers can be used to foster peer instruction, engage in friendly competition, initiate content discourse, direct content delivery[https://itc2.utk.edu/newsletter_monthly/2012_03/classroom2.jpg], and of course enhance content retention. Attend an Advanced Clicker Technology workshop to help increase engagement in your class. Visit the OIT workshops<https://oit.utk.edu/Training/instructor-led/Pages/default.aspx> page or contact the OIT HelpDesk at 974-9900 or help.utk.edu<file:///Downloads/help.utk.edu>.

IT Community of Practice Moves about Campus
[https://itc2.utk.edu/newsletter_monthly/2012_03/CoP2.jpg]For our February meeting, we traveled to the Ag Campus to visit the Technology Enhanced, Active Learning (TEAL) classroom in the Ellington Plant Sciences Building. The TEAL lab is equipped with some of the latest hardware and software available for teaching and learning. We got a chance to experience the equipment from the students' perspective by using iPads, laptops, and cellphones with classroom displays for small group collaboration and engagement. To learn more about the facilities and various software available, contact Joanne Logan at 974-8803 or [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. Join us on March 28, 2012, from 12:30 – 1:30 as the IT CoP Brown Bag lunch meeting visits the Scripps Convergence Lab in the Communications Building, Room 402G.

For more information, or to be added to the IT CoP mailing list, contact Christina Goode at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> or 974-6470.

New Apps@UT Server
A new server named Apps@UT now provides applications, disk space, and computing power to all UTK faculty, staff, and students. Apps@UT will let you run software so that it appears to be installed and running on your PC, Mac, Linux computer or even iPad or Android tablet. The applications can open files stored on your local computer and print to your local printer.

Macintosh users should find Apps@UT particularly useful since much of the software is not available in native Mac form. However, Mac users will be able to run them just fine without the need for a copy of Windows on their machines (or Bootcamp or Parallels). Initially Apps@UT has 29 research applications, but in the coming months we will expand that selection to include a much wider range of software, eventually containing most of the applications that the OIT computer labs now offer.

Each person at UTK will also have 25 Gigabytes of storage space available. Somewhat like the popular Dropbox service, this storage space, called TStorage, will be accessible from the server and from your desktop/laptop too! Unlike the server it replaces (Analysis.utk.edu<http://Analysis.utk.edu>), there is no fee for faculty and staff to use it. It also has far more power and many hundreds of simultaneous logins available.

Using Apps@UT is easy. Full instructions, including a list of applications, are at http://tiny.utk.edu/apps. A set of frequently asked questions is available at http://oit.utk.edu/helpdesk/kb/177/. As usual, if you have problems using the server or the software that is on it, contact the OIT HelpDesk at 974-9900.

Stata 12 Now Available
The new Apps@UT server has the latest version of Stata 12 MP. This version adds a wide range of new features such as import/export of Excel files, structural equation modeling with a graphical model builder, and improved multiple imputation. For details about those and many other improvements, see http://www.stata.com/stata12/.
