Registration is open for the March 21 and April 18 Talking Freight seminars. These seminars will cover a two part series on Freight and the Environment. You must register for each seminar individually. The registration link is provided with each seminar description.

Talking Freight: Two Part Series on Freight and the Environment

Freight movement by highway and rail is a cornerstone of the U.S. economy.  However, the movement of freight is increasingly impacted by congestion, overburdened infrastructure and socio-economic issues. Thus, there is a need to emphasize and improve sustainability of the freight system and balance economic and environmental stewardship.

Part 1 – March 21, 2012 1:00 – 2:30 pm EDT

Part 1 of the series will cover examples of what is currently being done in the U.S. to reduce diesel emissions and how consideration of emissions can be integrated in the freight planning process.  The agenda will include:

· Rebecca Watts Hull and Alan Jones from the Southeast Diesel Collaborative will discuss the need to reduce emissions from freight movement (health and environmental), strategies they have become aware of to reduce emissions and levels of exposure, and an introduction to  integrating consideration of emissions in freight planning processes. 

· A representative from the Northeast Transportation and Climate Initiative (TCI) freight working group will discuss TCI’s recently completed study of diesel emissions in the Northeast.

· Alan Bates from Shorepower Technologies will discuss truck stop electrification (TSE), specifically their DOE-funded project with Cascade Sierra Solutions to implement 50 new TSE facilities and equip trucks to plug into shore power, how the technology works, and the ins & outs of finding the right location and making it work in terms of cost and logistics.  

Part 2 – April 18, 2012 1:00 – 2:30 pm EDT

Part  2 of the series will address the research and program efforts are underway within the U.S. to improve our understanding of freight movements in corridors and international borders and their potential implications on the environment. The agenda will include:

· Dr Josias Zietsman of the Texas Transportation Institute will discuss developing performance measures for sustainable freight movement.

· Sylvia Grijalva of FHWA will discuss the U.S./Mexico International Border Emissions and Border Wait-time Analysis Support Study;.

· Cheryl Bynum of the U.S. EPA will discuss the EPA SmartWay program efforts and initiatives.

If you have not yet participated in Talking Freight, I encourage you to do so. These monthly seminars, sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, are held via web conference, which means that you view the PowerPoint presentations over the Internet while listening to the presenters over your computer or the telephone. There is no cost involved and you do not have to leave your desk to participate.
