Responsible for the management of archival records, both digital and physical, held in the Virginia Room. This includes performing duties relating to their appraisal, arrangement, description, preservation and access. Perform public reference services in the Virginia Room using knowledge of traditional and computer-based resources. Respond to reference questions in person, by telephone, fax and e-mail. Assist in the creation and delivery of in-house and outreach programming. Work on special and library system related projects as required. Archives experience preferred. Graduate level archives training and/or graduate of Modern Archives Institute preferred. ALA accredited MLS or MLIS required. Work schedule may include evenings and weekends.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Performs responsible administrative and professional work in managing and coordinating one or more specialty areas of the library system to include technical, reference, children’s or young adult services. Major responsibilities include delivering professional assistance to library patrons, providing responsible leadership for the operation of one or more of the specialty services of the library system, and planning and organizing programs, services, and support activities. Does related work as required

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Receives, catalogs and classifies library materials; interprets and applies OCLC, AACRII, MARC format, authority, relative tables, and other professional standards.
  • Checks and revises catalog records.
  • Maintains integrated system’s bibliographic records.
  • Actively seeks to improve catalog access points for the public.
  • Supervises materials cataloging and processing workflow; devises collection maintenance projects.
  • Designs, plans and implements programs; evaluates library programming and services; collects and analyzes community feed back and statistics on program and services; maintains various collections and formats.
  • Assists in preparing annual budget, particularly as it relates to divisoinal services; pursues funding for programming through grants, corporate sponsorships and local business donations.
  • Plans, directs and provides outreach services to area schools and childcare providers including library visits, classroom visits and daycare story times.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of story hours and youth programs.
  • Selects and plans outside performers or presenters according to County procurement guidelines; evaluates proposed programs for safety hazards, feasibility and age appropriateness.
  • Networks with colleagues and attends professional seminars and training events keeping abreast of service innovations and best practices for adult and youth services.
  • Answers complex reference questions and performs reader's advisory.
  • Evaluates, selects and maintains electronic resources.
  • Conducts staff training on new or existing hardware, software, or database products or library services.
  • Designs and implements web-based services.
  • Recruits, trains and supervises volunteers; works with Library Friends and civic groups.
  • Oversees collection development for the division; evaluates library collections for completeness, currency and condition and removes materials on regular basis.
  • Supervises, evaluates, instructs and collaborates with other library management staff; conducts periodic meetings of youth services staff facilitating communication, knowledge sharing and program coordination and outreach; assumes responsibility of staff and building in the absence of other professional staff.
  • Prepares press releases, publicity flyers, public service announcements and other materials publicizing programming; creates and updates website pages regarding activities and opportunities; contributes to Library social network outreach.
  • Works closely with consortium personnel and other professionals in the region; serves as liaison to schools.

NON ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    • Supervises preparation of books for bindery
    • Assists at circulation desk when needed

REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES:

Education

Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited program.

Experience

Required: Considerable experience in professional library work or comparable public, retail, or technical service experience. Recent substantive training or accredited coursework in relevant areas may be an acceptable substitute for professional library experience, particularly when combined with other responsible retail, public or technical service experience.

Certifications/ Licenses

Must be eligible for certification as a professional librarian by the State of Virginia.

Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license and have a good driving record.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of methods and principles involved in providing reference, technical or youth services.
  • Thorough knowledge of professional library principles, standards, methods and techniques pertinent to the operation of a specialty services division.
  • Thorough knowledge of English, spelling, arithmetic and basic statistics.
  • Technical expertise utilizing and maintaining automated systems and products.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and make reports.
  • Ability to catalog and classify materials
  • Ability to develop and maintain appropriate collections pertaining to specific library divisions
  • Ability to work well with library personnel and to maintain good relations with the citizens in the community
  • Ability to design and implement work programs
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to direct the activities of subordinate staff and to properly motivate and develop staff.
