At Florida, I work with county agents, state specialists and teaching faculty.  Here’s what we are currently doing:

County agents – still 12 month with no intent to do anything different.

State specialists – still 12 month, but we have started allowing them to “renegotiate” their salary once every five years.  This basically means that if they have non-state funds available to fund a salary increase we will approve it.  But if that non-state support dries up, we lower their salary back down to the state-funded portion.  This is fairly new for us and I think we only have maybe three people doing that.

Lecturers – have always been 12 month.  But lately we have hired 3 Lecturers at on 9-month contracts and I think this will be the trend in the future.  We are not looking to convert any current 12 month lecturers to a 9 month contract, however.  Lecturers at UF require a master’s degree.

Hope this helps.

Have any of you begun moving 12-month faculty to 9, 10, or 11 month appointments?  If so, can you send me a copy of any “plan” you used?  Particular questions we’re trying to answer are ----

·         Number of months faculty were reduced to.  Do all take off the same months?  If not, how are the months determined?

·         Did you use the standard salary reduction formula or did they get a salary advantage by moving and/or the opportunity to make up the salary for the other months with grant or other similar funds?

·         Were the moves voluntary or involuntary --- and does your system allow these changes to be done on an involuntary basis?

·         Did you do this for faculty in the federal (we only have CSRS) retirement system – our understanding has always been that these individuals have to stay on 12-month appointments.

·         Was this done for all faculty, or just certain groups.  If only for certain groups, what was the rationale?

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.  Hope you are all well.
