In the 90’s OSU moved to 11 or 9 month appointments for new faculty.  For us, that translates to mostly 11-month appointments since we combine teaching, research, or extension appointments.  In AG most of those on a 12-month appointments are on federal retirement and nearing retirement (or could retire).  We have not had them “switch” to an 11-month appt. Once they are gone, replacements (if filled) will be an 11-month appointment.   

There have been no “forced” reduction in appointment periods here.

Have any of you begun moving 12-month faculty to 9, 10, or 11 month appointments?  If so, can you send me a copy of any “plan” you used?  Particular questions we’re trying to answer are ----

·        Number of months faculty were reduced to.  Do all take off the same months?  If not, how are the months determined? 

·        Did you use the standard salary reduction formula or did they get a salary advantage by moving and/or the opportunity to make up the salary for the other months with grant or other similar funds?

·        Were the moves voluntary or involuntary --- and does your system allow these changes to be done on an involuntary basis?

·        Did you do this for faculty in the federal (we only have CSRS) retirement system – our understanding has always been that these individuals have to stay on 12-month appointments.

·        Was this done for all faculty, or just certain groups.  If only for certain groups, what was the rationale?
