East Tennessee State University (ETSU) seeks applications and nominations for the position of Dean of University Libraries.  East Tennessee State University, located in northeast Tennessee, is a regional state-supported institution serving over 15,000 students.  It offers nearly 235 programs of study in its eleven colleges and schools and is one of six public universities governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents.   A description of ETSU, its programs, and the region which it serves can be found at http://www.etsu.edu.

 

The Dean of University Libraries is responsible to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for providing strong leadership in administration of university libraries: the Charles C. Sherrod Library on the main campus and the library at ETSU at Kingsport.  The Dean provides strong, effective advocacy externally and on academic and administrative councils of the University, participating in strategic planning and policy development for the University, as well as the libraries.  The Dean provides an environment that promotes teamwork and collegiality among library faculty and staff for the purpose of providing excellent service to all library constituencies.   The Dean provides vision and policy direction in all areas of library services, including collection development, personnel policy, public and technical services, budget, and facilities planning.

 

Minimum qualifications include a M.L.S. or the equivalent graduate degree from an ALA-accredited institution; earned doctorate preferred; experience in a university library setting; tenure and appointment at a rank of associate or full professor; a minimum of ten years experience in progressively more responsible positions in academic librarianship; documented administrative experience in a higher education setting; and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

 

Essential functions include providing leadership in development of shared short and long-range goals and plans for the libraries; articulating the role of the library in meeting the changing needs of all university constituencies; encouraging effective systems that integrate current and emerging information technology; overseeing assessment activities and demonstrating use of assessment in strategic planning; supporting and facilitating a culture of collegial governance; supporting professional development and training for faculty and staff in a rapidly changing environment, including support for faculty activities toward promotion and tenure; overseeing evaluation processes for the library faculty and staff; overseeing and allocating budget and other resources to achieve library goals; participating in institutional processes for planning, budget development, policy development, and decision making; securing library funding and support through philanthropic cultivation, grants, and other means; promoting the libraries within the university community; cultivating community support through the university library associates and other bodies; promoting effective working relationships with other units, especially those involved in distance education, information management, and emerging technologies; building visibility through mutually beneficial relationships with external groups; promoting collaborative and consortial relationships with other libraries; participating in the professional library community and related organizations and bodies on the state, regional, and national levels; and fostering life-long learning across the campus and wider community.
