--- Campus Entrance Enhancement --- During the winter break, trees were removed along Lake Loudoun Boulevard. This was done in preparation for a project that will enhance that campus entrance. More details about the upcoming work will be announced soon.

--- Join Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honor Society to hear about "Teach for America" from campus campaign coordinator Tyler King. "Teach For America" is a national non-profit organization that recruits college seniors to consider teaching K-12 education in low income communities across the country for two years upon graduation. Hear a brief overview of PAD for prospective members and a presentation from Maria Smith of the new Belmont University College of Law. --- The Student Alumni Associates are having their annual membership drive starting now with an open house at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, in the Tyson House next to Hodges Library. --- The BOSS Dance Company will host its annual Spring Showcase at the Clarence Brown Theater, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Jan. 19, 20, and 21, at 7:30 p.m. Featured styles of dance will include ballet, modern, tap, musical theater, and hip hop performed by UT students under the direction of professional and student choreographers. Tickets are $5 for students and faculty and $10 for general admission. --- Author Pamela Schoenewaldt will read from her historical novel of the immigrant experience at 7:00 p.m. Monday, January 23, in the Hodges Library Auditorium. "When We Were Strangers" follows a young needleworker in the 1880s, forced to leave her mountain village in Southern Italy, who endures a rough passage through American cities to a very different life and work in San Francisco. --- Are you ready to change the world? Applications open on Wednesday, Feb. 1 for UTK's 2012 LeaderShape Institute. The institute, now in its 26th year, is an intensive and energizing six-day leadership program (May 11-16, 2012) committed to producing extraordinary results while also helping college students to develop a commitment to live and lead with a high level of integrity. --- The English Language Institute (ELI) is seeking volunteers from the campus and community to serve in its spring Conversation Partner Program.  Conversation Partners meet on a weekly basis with ELI international students for the purpose of practicing English conversation. --- UT's Clifton M. Jones Student Leadership Conference will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2012, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the UC. This year students will be able to learn how to "Lead with..." integrity, authenticity, confidence, purpose, or any other particular skill, context or attribute for which you have a passion. By attending three different breakout sessions on a variety of different topics, you will be able to hone your leadership skills and interact with the premier student leaders, faculty, and staff at UT. This year's conference will feature keynote speaker Doc Hendley, a 2009 CNN Hero and author of "Wine to Water: A Bartender's Quest to Bring Clean Water to the World." The conference is free and a t-shirt, lunch, and conference materials will be provided to all conference participants. Dress is business casual. The conference is limited to the first 400 students who register so be sure to sign up soon at http://sold.utk.edu/conference/.

Important Deadlines

--- The 16th annual Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement (EUReCA) showcases research and creative activities by currently enrolled undergraduate students in collaboration with a faculty mentor. Entries can be individual or group projects and are judged by a combination of UT Knoxville faculty members and community professionals. The standard award is $200 plus any division match or supplement. EUReCA will be held March 28 and 29 in the UC Ballroom as part of Research Week. An awards presentation will be held at 6 p.m. March 29 in the UC Auditorium. For more information on the exhibition, visit http://research.utk.edu/eureca/. --- 2012 Welcome Leader (WL) applications are due by Wednesday, Jan. 25. WL is a leadership and mentoring opportunity open to all students interested in assisting first year students in their transition to UT. You need no previous leadership experience to serve in this exciting role. Each WL will serve as a mentor and guide to approximately 20-25 students and introduce them to campus through Welcome Week activities, Aug. 16-22. In this volunteer position, the WL will guide freshmen through Welcome Week, with a focus on providing a quality transitional experience for these students. Gain excellent leadership experience and share your passion for UT with all incoming new students! This is a great opportunity to have a big impact on UT, with a small time commitment. Ready for the World Events

--- Nourish International meeting, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, in HSS 55. All are welcome to attend. The mission of Nourish International is to eradicate poverty by engaging students and empowering communities. Since 2003, Nourish International has sent $212,280 and 281 students abroad, working with community partners on 45 projects around the world. Last summer, NI students went to Uganda to create major change by helping orphans build their very own sustainable garden and this year the group is interested in sending students to South America to help out.
