Good News

--- Students and faculty returning to classrooms in the Humanities and Social Sciences building today will find some classrooms and almost all hallways stripped of floor tiles and carpets--all in preparation for a major renovation that will be completed this summer.

--- Theresa Lee, who was hired as dean in June after a nationwide search, has now arrived on campus to lead the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition to her administrative appointment, she has an academic appointment of professor in the Department of Psychology. She began work January 1.

--- Denise Gardner has been named the new director of the UT Knoxville Office of Institutional Research and Assessment. The office provides data that help the university plan and make decisions, as well as meet a variety of state and federal government mandates. In addition, the office oversees teaching evaluation through the Student Assessment and Instruction System and coordinates the assessment function of the university. 

--- Hundreds of well-wishers lined up in front of Neyland Stadium Tuesday to congratulate Daniel and Mandy Watson, the Knoxville couple selected to receive a new home courtesy of the ABC-TV program "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." A mini-parade in the Watsons' honor ran along Phillip Fulmer Way in front of the stadium.

--- The "Campout at The Summitt" basketball lock-in Volunteer spirit event will be held from 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, to 6 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Thompson-Boling Arena. Sponsored by the "UniTe" student organization and UT Athletics. The event will take place leading up to the Tennessee basketball game versus the University of Connecticut Huskies. Get Involved

--- Tutoring and workout mentors are needed to support students in the FUTURE program on the UT campus. The FUTURE program is a two-year, post-secondary education opportunity for young adults aged 18-29 with intellectual disabilities or autism. Mentors are asked to work 2 hours or more a week directly with students. (Independent Study course credit available to qualified mentors.) --- The 11th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, brought to you by the TeamVOLS Volunteer Center, will take place on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012. 

King said that "service is the great equalizer" and this nationally observed day of service aims to bring UT students together, regardless of barriers that have divided us in the past, to serve the Knoxville community. 

Online pre-registration is required and day-of check-in will take place from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 21, in the UC. A light breakfast will be served, a brief presentation will be made and students will be transported to service sites around the city. All students will be back to the University Center by 1 p.m.

--- Interested in becoming a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honor Society? We only initiate new members in the fall. We are still accepting applications and would love to answer any of your questions regarding membership and what it means to get involved in AED.  The application can be found on our website http://web.utk.edu/~aed/joining.html. Completed applications can be submitted to the Arts and Sciences Advising Office in 313 Ayres Hall. --- Spring is the season to apply for undergraduate research opportunities across the country. Many deadlines fall during January and February. Another way to keep up on these opportunities as they become available is to visit Facebook and "like" the Council on Undergraduate Research page.

--- The UT Outdoor Program is offering semester-long bike rentals to students. The cost is $40 and includes a helmet, lock, and 3-speed bicycle suitable for commuting or recreational riding. Rentals are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Outdoor Center (on the first floor of the TRECS), beginning today.

Knoxville Connection

--- Girls on the Run of Knoxville is a non-profit, 10-week after-school program for girls in the 3rd through 8th grade. Its mission is to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. The non-profit combines training for a 5K running event with healthy living education. Girls on the Run programs instill self-esteem and strong values through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships, and physical training - all through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff, and the community.

New coaches training starts on January 26. The program begins February 13. The 5k race will be help April 29.
