GSLIS Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Programs Linda C. Smith has received the 2012 Service Award from the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE). Over the course of her career, she has served three three-year terms on the ALISE Board: 1988-1990 as secretary-treasurer, 2003-2005 as director for special interest groups, and 2008-2010 as vice president, president, and past president.

Smith joined ALISE as a doctoral student in 1977. She has credited the organization as being significant to “every stage in my career including as a doctoral student at Syracuse, a beginning faculty member at Illinois, a mentor for doctoral students, an educator concerned with online pedagogy after teaching for twenty years in a classroom, and as an associate dean for academic programs.”

In past years, Smith has received two major awards from ALISE: the Award for Professional Contribution to LIS Education (2008) and the Award for Teaching Excellence (1999).
