The School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) at the University of Alberta invites applications for two (2) full-time tenure track positions. The date of the appointments, at the Assistant Professor level, will ideally be July 1, 2012.
We seek candidates who are committed to teaching in a student and community-centered environment, who are excited about research and its applications, and who share our passion for libraries, other information centres, and the related professions as they are practiced in large and small communities.
Successful candidates will have a wide variety of teaching interests and are amenable to teaching both foundational and a variety of elective courses in a curriculum aligned with American Library Association (ALA) Competencies. Candidates will identify expertise in one or more areas of the School’s MLIS curriculum. Interest in, and experience with, online and in-person teaching is desirable. They will be intensely committed to developing future library and information professionals who are effective leaders. Other instructional duties will include advising and supervising students.
The positions require team players with an earned Ph.D. in Library and Information Science or a related field. Candidates near completion will also be considered. An MLIS is highly desirable and professional work experience is preferred. Candidates may have expertise and/or research interest in, but not limited to, one or more of the following areas: knowledge management, bibliometrics and citation analysis, and information visualization; information retrieval, information organization, information behavior, and user services (including services to children and youth); or information policy. New streams are being developed in digital curation and public librarianship as it is practiced in rural, small-, and medium-sized settings.
For over 40 years, the School of Library and Information Studies has offered the only ALA-accredited MLIS program on the Canadian prairies. The School of Library and Information Studies is located in Rutherford Library South—the heart of the University of Alberta campus—and is a part of the Faculty of Education.
