There was a great panel presentation at ASIS&T about ten years ago featuring information scientists who had been in covert intelligence during WWII. Some were British and some US. Some were military and some were CIA or similar orgs. Two were even wearing "the old tie". It was interesting and exciting. I have my notes filed away somewhere. (I remember wishing that Wilf Lancaster - CIA I think - had been there, but he had retired from ASIS by then.) I believe that many developments we take for granted now had their origin far away from the public light of peer review and publication.
