Course announcement: Health Geography

GEOG 309 Health Geography
Spring 2012
Meeting times: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:40-1:55 in BGB 101
Instructor: Kevin Durand

Course description: Approaches to health and healthcare are changing. Interdisciplinary research has broadened our understanding of influences on health and disease, encouraging people to think beyond purely clinical solutions. In particular, race/ethnicity, poverty, and political power are now widely understood to be important factors in health and healthcare. As a result, students and practitioners of health are seeking innovative ways to address health problems, including both technological and socio-political approaches.

A geographic approach to health uses the tools and theories of geography to consider not only disease distributions but also how changing relationships between people and their environments (natural, built and social environments) influence human health. While encompassing a wide variety of topics, health geography is defined by its focus on how space and place relate to health. The health topics we explore in this class will primarily revolve around global health issues, contrasting health problems in low-income regions with health in industrialized countries as well as exploring the reasons behind those differences.

This course provides an overview of the topics, methods, and techniques of the geography of health. The course is organized around three major themes:

Ecological approaches
Social approaches
Techniques and applications
