Ph.D. Candidate Wins Crystallography Award

Ercan Cakmak, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), won the 2012 Ludo Frevel Crystallography Scholarship Award, which recognizes the outstanding achievements of the student as a promising candidate in crystallography related research. The award is given annually, and the 20th annual awards for the 2012 scholarships were announced by The International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD) on Dec. 21, 2011. Cakmak's research focuses on the investigation of phase transformation, crystallographic texture and internal strain evolutions in transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) alloys under complex mechanical loading conditions using synchrotron x-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction techniques. Cakmak's dissertation advisor is Dr. Hahn Choo, associate professor in the MSE department. Cakmak's research has been supported by the National Science Foundation Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program.

Fluid Power Scholars Program: A Paid Industry Summer Internship!

The Fluid Power Scholars Program is a collaborative effort between the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP) and companies in the fluid power industry who are corporate members of the CCEFP. This highly selective summer program identifies and connects the very best undergraduate engineering students across the U.S. to the fluid power industry with the purpose of training the next-generation of fluid power leaders.

This is a highly competitive program, open to undergraduates who have successfully completed at least two years in an accredited engineering program in the U.S. The Scholars program begins with an intensive three-and-a-half day instructional program in fluid power, taught at the Fluid Power Institute at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), and follows with internships in the fluid power industry. The Fluid Power "Bootcamp" at MSOE will be held May 21-24, 2012. Students should expect to spend 10-11 weeks as a intern in their host company. Up to 10 undergraduate students will be selected as Fluid Power Scholars by a committee of faculty and industry representatives. In addition to their paid internships, scholars will receive stipends for travel and living expenses associated with their work at MSOE.

UTK STEM Faculty Invited to Host Pre-Collegiate Research Scholars

Registration is now open for UTK STEM faculty interested in participating in the second year of the county-wide Pre-Collegiate Research Scholars Program, a partnership between UTK and Knox County Schools. New and continuing faculty are welcome to register for the program year beginning Summer 2012. Two high school seniors from each of 13 Knox County public high schools will be working under the direction of their high school teacher mentors who are partnered with UTK faculty mentors to co-mentor each shared student. The program’s goal is to host high school students in UT research laboratories so that they may experience the excitement of scientific research and engage in their own original research. This year we are more deliberately matching UTK faculty with KCS teachers, hoping to form longer-term working relationships for the better monitoring of each participating student as well as offering possibility of further collaborations between UTK and KCS personnel (for grants, etc.) College of Engineering and College of Arts and Sciences faculty interested in serving as faculty mentors should register online as soon as possible (no later than Feb 6, 2012). We hope to expand beyond these two colleges in subsequent years.

Engineering Professional Practice Student Feature

Featured Student: Benjamin Roehrs

Our featured student this week is Benjamin Roehrs, an electrical engineering major who is completing his co-op assignment at BMW Manufacturing Company, LLC, in Greer, S.C.

“I spent my first co-op rotation at BMW Manufacturing in the Paint Shop Controls Group,” Roehrs said. “The Controls Group is responsible for the upkeep and expansion of the various control systems in use within the Paint Shop. When not maintaining or modifying the control systems currently in use, my department plans out system upgrades or new installs. In addition to control systems, the Controls Group also provides technical consulting for other groups within the paint shop.”

The main project and responsibilities that he dealt with were planning an identification system for special units (test units, new models, non-customer units) that require unique processing within the Paint Shop.

"My responsibilities for this project consisted of all technical planning for the installation, including initial concept design revisions, drafting a scope of work, working with contracted firms that bid on the project and overall project management,” he said.

Roehrs said the most valuable benefit from his co-op experience was experience in project management.

"This encompasses both the technical details involved in planning a project and the internal processes involved," Roehrs said. "I truly believe the co-op experience, if not just an internship, should be required for engineers."

Students may read more about their peers’ co-op/internship experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work – In Their Own Words.”

Small-Scale Mechanical Characterization Using
Instrumented Indentation Techniques

Speaker: Dr. Erik Herbert

Abstract: Instrumented indentation or nanoindentation is widely used to investigate the mechanical properties of small volumes of material such as thin films, modified surfaces, individual phases and microscopic devices. The goal of this seminar is to present a brief overview of the underlying principles of the measurement systems and then highlight the strengths and weakness of the technique by carefully examining several state-of-the-art applications. Among the topics discussed will be characterization of the complex modulus, the indentation size effect, in-situ measurements performed in the scanning electron microscope and the high energy X-ray beam line at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), and residual stress measurements in doubly clamped thin film bridges. For each of these topics, the reliability of the data will be addressed by identifying and discussing the most significant experimental obstacles, the proposed solution(s), the relevant assumptions and the inherent limitations.

Biography: Dr. Herbert is a research assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He received his Ph.D. in MSE from UTK in 2008 under the supervision of Dr. George M. Pharr and Dr. Warren C. Oliver. Shortly after starting his undergraduate degree in MSE, Herbert began working at Nano Instruments in 1997 as a co-op student. He spent 12 years at Nano, working in a variety of roles and witnessing the business transition from Nano Instruments to the MTS Nano Instruments Innovation Center in 1998, and then into the Materials Science Solutions Unit of Agilent Technologies in 2008. Herbert left Agilent in 2009 to take a postdoctoral research appointment in MSE at UTK and worked as a visiting scientist at the Center for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices (CRANN) at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He transitioned into his current role as a research assistant professor in 2010. Over the past 15 years, his professional focus has been on the development of small-scale mechanical characterization techniques. He has been awarded one patent in the U.S. and currently has 22 publications in peer-reviewed journals such as Philosophical Magazine, Journal of Physics, Journal of Materials Research, Thin Solid Films and Scripta Materialia.
