Job Description


Job Summary:
Performs all selection duties completed in other Approval centers. Makes buying decisions for selected publishers, while also acting as a liaison between publishers and other Ingram departments to include, the Product Department and the Collection Development Department.


Essential Duties:
• Meets regularly with publisher representatives and Ingram buyers for assigned publishers.
• Represents Ingram Coutts to other visiting publisher representatives.
• Creates pre- and post-publication online bibliographic descriptions in CIS, using publisher-provided data and/or book-in-hand, to make buying decisions for Ingram Coutts, and Approval selections on behalf of academic library customers.
• Serves as the Approval Department ‘expert’ on publishing trends and business practices, providing information, briefings, and training as needed.
• In coordination with Collections Consultants and Ingram Product Specialists, performs literature searches for retrospective collection development by designing (in-house) back-run profiles, or using (external) library and publisher databases.
• Maintains in-depth knowledge of the publishing industry, including distribution channels for new books within the department’s scope.
• Selects new book orders from publishers’ catalogues and other sources in support of Approval Programs.
• Creates and updates bibliographic description in CIS for new titles.
• Adjusts computer-assisted selection for library profiles.
• Maintains close communication with library clients, in coordination with Sales.
• Reviews appropriate trade or national bibliographies such as NYTBR, TLS, Chronicle of Higher Education.
• Reviews titles of interest from the above sources not on order/treated, analyses reasons why not, and takes action to resolve.
• Reviews all library rejects, which he/she has selected to minimize library receipt of unwanted books, in coordination with Collections Consultants.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of the publishing industry to include distribution channels for new books
• Knowledge of LC, NLM, and Dewey classification schedules, non-subject parameters and publishers.
• Ability to prioritize and work independently.
• Written and oral communication skills
• Personal computing skills to include Microsoft Word and Excel
• Ability to be flexible/multi-task based on workflow demands.
• Ability to speak, write and read the English language.
• Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintain them over time.

Basic/Minimum Qualification
Education and Experience
• MLS/ MLIS preferred.
• 3 years experience in Collection Development, Acquisitions, and/or Approval Selection with an academic library or book vendor.


Essential Physical Demands
• Standard office environment.
• Ability to read, write, speak, hear, see, think, communicate, concentrate, learn, and work.
• Ability to sit at workstation for extended periods of time.
• Ability to work effectively using a personal computer for long periods of time.
• Ability to operate computer equipment, including keyboard and monitor, phone equipment and other necessary office equipment.
