Assistant Professor of Library and Information Studies, Tenure Track

Harrington School of Communication and Media, University of Rhode Island

The Graduate School of Library and Information Studies, a program of the Harrington School of Communication and Media at the University of Rhode Island, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor beginning in Fall 2012. We seek candidates with general expertise in two or more of the following areas: new media and information technologies, video gaming, web design and user interfaces, information storage & retrieval, records management, content licensing & vendor negotiation, information policy, legal and ethical issues in LIS and related fields, digital archives, special collections, and/or other appropriate and related fields.

A doctorate in library and information science or a doctorate in a related field plus a master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or international equivalent is required (doctorate earned by August 15, 2012).

Candidates should have the demonstrated ability to teach at least one required course as well as courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. Candidates should have the demonstrated ability for highly effective teaching in both face-to-face and online contexts. Normal teaching load is three courses per academic semester. Research or creative activities, academic advising, department or university service, and professionally related service are expected. Opportunities for summer teaching and research support exist.

The Harrington School of Communication and Media unites faculty and individual strengths in six academic areas, including communication studies, film/media, journalism, public relations, writing & rhetoric, and library and information studies. The faculty are dedicated to the study of communication and new technologies that transform the rapidly changing ways we receive, process, mediate, archive, and transmit information. We seek candidates with interdisciplinary interests and a global perspective.
