1. UT Undergrad Spearheads Calculator Donation to Knox County Schools

Students at Knox County’s new Paul L Kelley Volunteer Academy got a generous gift from UT students yesterday. Physics student George Duffy started Calculators to Classrooms to encourage college students who no longer need the expensive devices to donate them to high school students who can't afford them. Duffy employed a beautiful, “engaged outreach” approach by first determining what the schools wanted most (instead of what he most wanted to give), and then by assessing and adjusting to better fit some of the stakeholders in the plan. Duffy said his first attempt to collect calculators consisted of setting up a table with a small sign on it, which flopped terribly. Next, with the help of two student groups, the Society of Physics Students and Students for Education Reform, he got more creative and set up a table offering free cookies in exchange for used calculators: Bingo!
