Florida International University Libraries seek an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented leader for the position of Head of Information & Research Services. This individual will continue the Libraries’ exploration and implementation of new approaches to reference, instruction, and outreach services. The ideal candidate will be an accomplished leader, skilled in managing change and committed to planning and evaluating programs and services that reflect the varied needs of students and faculty served, as well as the diverse culture and innovative spirit of the University.
The Head of Information & Research Services must possess the vision and collaborative ability to guide the evolution of information and research services at the FIU Libraries, as we meld and transform the traditional and contemporary library to meet the future needs of our academic community. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Public Services, the Head of Information & Research Services will manage all activities of the Information & Research Services Department at the Steven and Dorothea Green Library, supervising and mentoring 12 library faculty and 4 paraprofessionals in a blended service environment including Reference & Instruction, and Government Documents.
In consultation with the Associate Dean for Public Services and department staff, and in alignment with the Libraries’ strategic plan, the incumbent will establish priorities, goals, and benchmarks for the department and its staff while measuring and evaluating progress and performance. Working closely with his or her counterpart at the Biscayne Bay Campus, he or she will contribute to library-wide planning, policy-making, goal-setting and assessment efforts, and will serve as the department advocate on the Libraries’ leadership committees. In addition, the incumbent
• Works with the library instruction coordinators, library and academic faculty, and external departments across the Libraries and the University to develop the Libraries’ program of research instruction.
• Develops budgets for anticipated and ongoing departmental needs.
• Stays current on trends and developments in the areas of research, instruction, and public services for academic libraries.
• Mentors librarians and library staff in the department, including hiring, orienting, training/development, organizing workloads, delegating responsibility, providing guidance and direction, monitoring and evaluating performance, coaching and counseling, and taking disciplinary action as necessary.
• Leads a team to set and implement a vision for innovative academic information service for the areas of reference, government documents, outreach, and library instruction.
• Fosters an environment that promotes exploration and implementation of new approaches to reference, instruction, and outreach services delivered through social networking tools, Web 2.0 applications and mobile computing platforms.
• Assesses effectiveness of the department's services using statistical analysis of service and usage data.
• Coordinates the work of the Information & Research Services Department in collaboration with other library departments across campuses.
• Participates in local, regional, and national organizations as appropriate.
• Participates in professional development, research, and service activities to meet the Libraries’ and University's requirements for promotion.

Minimum Qualifications:
• ALA-accredited master's degree
• Record of demonstrated experience in positions of increasing responsibility in an academic or research library environment
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
• Effective leadership and supervisory skills
• Significant reference and instruction experience
Desirable Qualifications:
• Evidence of collaborative decision making
• Creative and critical thinking, with the flexibility to apply new solutions to rapidly changing expectations
• Demonstrated ability to inspire and enthuse colleagues, coupled with a willingness to take calculated risks to provide creative learning opportunities for library users
• Understanding of the life and functions of a multifaceted depository
Pay Range Commensurate with Education and Experience
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday with possible weekends

The Head oversees all aspects of access to the law library’s space and collections, both print and electronic.
