Doctoral students Adam Kehoe and Colin Rhinesmith, from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois, have received the Best Paper Award at Community Informatics Research Network Conference in Prato, Italy.

 

The paper, “Disentangling Measurement in Community Informatics” reviews the methods used in the 2004-2010 contents (118 papers) of the Journal of Community Informatics, with a special focus on quantitative methodologies. Kehoe and Rhinesmith argue that high-level theoretical questions and hyper-local research questions have been predominant in community informatics, and that these research questions are not typically amenable to quantitative methodologies. They conclude by suggesting ways in which quantitative methods could be better incorporated in the field in the future by focusing on specific hypotheses generated from interpretive methods.
