The monthly e-newsletter of the Southern African NGO Network (SANGONeT)

Executive Director's Comments

Welcome to the 89th edition of SANGONeT's monthly e-newsletter!

Although 2011 is coming to an end, there is no shortage of important developments in the local and international civil society and development space.

In South Africa, the National Assembly approved the controversial Protection of [State] Information Bill (Secrecy Bill) on 22 November 2011 in Cape Town. Despite ongoing efforts by various media and civil society organisations and opposition MPs, both outside and inside Parliament, ANC MPs used their majority to approve the Bill. Activists termed the day - `Black Tuesday’ - likening it to `Black Wednesday’ or 17 October 1977, a day on which the apartheid regime arrested activists and banned a number of media houses and anti-apartheid groups.

Click here to read the comments of various civil society groups in response to the Bill.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign started on 25 November 2011. The theme of this year's campaign is "From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Let's Challenge Militarism and End Violence Against Women!". This annual international campaign runs from 25 November, International Day Against Violence Against Women, to 10 December, International Human Rights Day, in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a human rights violation.

One of the biggest and most important events of 2011 is the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP17). Held from 28 November to 9 December 2011 in Durban under the theme ‘Green Economy - Powering Climate Solutions’, the event is attended by thousands of representatives from governments, international institutions and civil society organisations to discuss the global effects of climate change and agree on concrete action in this regard.

The Fourth High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness is held from 29 November to 1 December 2011 in Busan, Korea. Delegates at this event will review global progress in improving the impact and value of development aid and make new commitments to further ensure that aid helps reduce poverty and supports progress in meeting the Millennium Development Goals.

All these developments and events will ultimately impact on the state of development in South Africa, the broader African continent and the rest of the world. Civil society voices and positions in response to the issues raised before, during and after these events are critical in ensuring that the outcomes and commitments made are relevant, realistic and ultimately, achievable, and that decision-makers are held accountable for their actions.

I therefore encourage Lwati readers to use the NGO Pulse Portal to highlight your views and comments about these events and developments and their impact on our society.

Turning to other issues, we have come to the end of the 2011 “No Pain No Gain”  fundraising campaign. Donations will be accepted until 30 November 2011 and I encourage you to make a donation, even at this late stage.

Remember, all money donated will be shared between five NGOs at the forefront of development and community work in South Africa - SANGONeT, Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), Starfish Greathearts Foundation and SCORE.

Click here for more information about the campaign and my run through the Sahara Desert.

As always, we are very interested in how you think we could best serve the NGO sector with relevant ICT products and services.

Please send us your views, comments and suggestions.

Best wishes

David Barnard
