Faculty position in Information Organization

Rank: Assistant Professor

The School of Information at the University of Michigan seeks a tenure-track assistant professor in the field of organization of digital information.

Candidates for this position should have a demonstrated research record addressing one or more of the following areas:
. Metadata systems, architectures, and applications
. Information representation or knowledge representation
. Ontology development and modeling
. Taxonomy, folksonomy, semantic networks, and other knowledge organization systems

A successful candidate will possess a strong technical grounding in systems design and development, or other approaches to large-scale digital collections, and will be strongly interested in bridging disciplines. The candidate's training may be in library and information science, archival science, computer science, or another relevant field. The new faculty member will conduct interdisciplinary research and teach innovative courses in information science. 

The faculty in the School work together with scientists and professionals associated with some of the world's largest and best digital information collections.  Among others, the University hosts the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) and the Institute for Social Research, two of the premier data collecting, curating and preserving organizations in academia.  The University was one of the original members of the Google Books project, and is a founder and leader of the Hathi Trust, with over 9 million digitized volumes. These collections and others at the University of Michigan offer rich opportunities for research, modeling, testing and evaluation of new forms of information representation and structure at scale.  

For all SI positions, we favor candidates whose research interests complement our existing expertise in such areas as computer-supported cooperative work; digital archives and preservation; human-computer interaction; incentive-centered design and information economics; information seeking, sharing and use; Internet-scale data, network and text analysis; social computing and informatics. 

The mission of the School of Information is to create knowledge so people can use information and technology to build a better world, and to educate socially-engaged information professionals. A successful candidate will be committed to, and will directly contribute to our goal of being the best research and teaching institution in socially engaged information and computing. 

The School is home to a dynamic and vibrant research and teaching program, with 35 FTE faculty, over 50 doctoral students, and over 400 students in its professional program, the Master of Science in Information. The School is commencing a new master's program, in Health Informatics, in fall 2012, offered jointly with the School of Public Health.  In partnership with other units, we recently launched an undergraduate informatics major.

Qualifications:
. Ph.D. in a relevant area, such as information science, library science, archival science, computer science, or another pertinent field
. Demonstrated potential for successful teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level
. Demonstrated potential for high scholarly impact
. A strong commitment to teaching, interdisciplinary research, and cultural diversity
