The University of the West Indies (UWI) is a dynamic, international institution serving the countries of the Commonwealth Caribbean. SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER IN

LIBRARY AND INFORMATION STUDIES

 

The Department of Library and Information Studies is committed to provide excellent teaching and research to produce library and information professionals who are equipped to function effectively in a variety of information environments within the Caribbean as well as in the global market place. The Department presently offers two undergraduate degree and two postgraduate degree programmes and staff members are required to teach at both levels, supervise student research, engage in research activities, and be actively involved in public service.

 

Applicants should have a doctoral degree (or nearly completed) in Library/Information Science or a related discipline such as Computer Science or Education and a broad knowledge of all areas of Library and Information Science.  Applicants should also possess a demonstrated record of high quality teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, a significant record of achievement in independent research and success in attracting research funding. 

The successful candidate will be required to:

 

§  Teach within at least three of the following areas – Cataloguing and Classification/Metadata, Management of all different types of libraries and information units,  Information/Emerging Technologies , and Foundations of Library and Information Science;

§  Research and publish in the area of Library and Information Science or areas related to the field;

§  Supervise MPhil/PhD graduate research;

§  Participate in the strategic planning and management of teaching and learning, including curricula development programmes within the Department and wider Faculty;

§  Contribute to the life of the University and to advance teaching, research and community outreach.

 

 

Excellent communication skills are essential, as is a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, service and technology application in the classroom. Applicants must possess a genuine interest in helping students and the ability to work effectively as a member of a team. Experience in developing and delivering programmes and courses by distance or online at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels will be an advantage.

The successful candidate is expected to assume duties on August 1, 2012.
