FACULTY POSITION – School of Library and Information Studies,  
University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The University of Wisconsin‐Madison School of Library and  
Information Studies (SLIS) seeks an exceptional candidate with  
demonstrated commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and  
service to join our dynamic learning community as Assistant Professor  
beginning fall 2012. SLIS faculty members are expected to conduct  
research, teach two courses per semester, advise master’s students  
and supervise doctoral research.

We seek applicants who have research and teaching expertise in one of  
the following areas: information use, behavior and practice, OR the  
history of print and digital culture.  Applications from outstanding  
candidates in other areas will also be considered.  Candidates should  
have a Ph.D. by August 2012, research and publications commensurate  
with experience or evidence of ability to carry out a research  
agenda, and potential for or demonstrated excellence in teaching. All  
candidates should be committed to diversity, prepared to seek  
opportunities to extend the School's funding opportunities and  
thriving collaborations, and to contribute to its service mission.  
Applicants should be prepared to teach in core areas of the master’s  
curriculum and to contribute to the distance master’s program.

SLIS has approximately 200 masters and 20 doctoral students in LIS.  
SLIS is a co-sponsor (with the Wisconsin Historical Society and the  
University of Wisconsin Libraries) of, and home to, the Center for  
the History of Print and Digital Culture.  The CHPDC fosters the  
interdisciplinary study of print culture, through lectures and  
colloquia, biennial conferences, and the University of Wisconsin  
Press series "Print Culture History in Modern America," which  
encourages scholarly work on the authorship, reading, publication and  
distribution of print and now digital materials, produced by those at  
both the center and the periphery of power.  SLIS is also a partner  
in the UW‐Madison Digital Studies initiative, a cross‐departmental  
initiative that prepares undergraduate students to critically analyze  
and creatively compose with new media and information technologies  
(see http://www.dighum.wisc.edu/).

SLIS is equipped with a newly remodeled instructional computer  
laboratory, a usability lab, and its own library, in addition to the  
resources of the University Libraries. It cooperates actively with  
the University Library System, the Cooperative Children's Book Center  
and the Wisconsin Historical Society's library and archives. It is  
also home to a large and vital Continuing Education Service and the  
UW Information/Communications Technology and Policy Research Cluster.  
It is located in a modern classroom building overlooking beautiful  
Lake Mendota in one of the world's finest universities and in one of  
the United States’ most livable cities.
