NC State University does have a volunteering leave policy - we call it Community Service Leave (CSL), whereby employees get 24 additional hours of community service leave per year above and beyond their annual leave.  This CSL took the place of a variety of small pots of leave for really specific things (e.g. parental leave, blood donation, mentoring, etc.). Not all activities are approved for CSL.


Those activities that generally are OK include but are not limited to:


Parental involvement in a child's school or child care program

Volunteer activities in a school or in a community service organization

Tutoring or mentoring in a school (if the employee tutors/mentors in an official school program, they actually get an ADDITIONAL 12 hours/year, for a total of 36 hours/year)

Political Activities including working inside the polls for the State or County Board of Election to facilitate the voting process as long as the employee is not receiving pay for the work.


Some activities are excluded from the program, including:

Athletic events for children

Civic group meetings

Fund-raising

Partisan political activity during State time and the use of State equipment or supplies


In addition, there are special guidelines that apply to Emergency Services, Blood, Bone Marrow and Organ Donorship, and Disaster Service Volunteer with the American Red Cross. These special cases are outlined in detail in the Office of State Personnel Community Leave Guidelines.

I think A&T has the same policy (Chiquita or Donna, correct me if I am wrong!), since this leave provision is governed by our State Office of Personnel.

Wasn’t the Oklahoma City conference fabulous?  Big cowboy boots to fill for future host institutions!  Nevertheless, Arkansas Extension is accepting the challenge and looking forward to hosting the 2012 Southern Region Conference in Little Rock. We hope to have dates and hotel information for you soon. The Southern Region Conference is such a good opportunity to share information, network, and experience the best the host state has to offer…  

 

And speaking of host states, we’re still looking for a Southern Region institution willing to host the 2013 National Extension and Research Administrative Officers’ Conference (NERAOC). The 2012 NERAOC is in Morgantown, West Virginia, in May and the folks there have developed some very specific conference planning tools to guide future NERAOC hosting institutions. West Virginia will also be forwarding seed money to help the next host institution with 2013 conference preparations. I do hope you’ll talk to your administration about this opportunity to showcase your state in Spring 2013.

 

Now for my question:

Does your institution/Extension Service have a program that allows employees to perform volunteer community service during working hours without using annual leave (e.g., volunteering in the public schools or at local food banks)? Thanks in advance for your response.
