National Science Foundation Program Opportunity

The Kansas State University National Science Foundation (NSF) Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) Program is open to Ph.D. seeking students who are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident in Agricultural Economics, Agronomy, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Grain Science, and Sociology. Some of these departments will allow you to pursue your Ph.D. after you complete your baccalaureate degree. IGERT trainees are organized within interdisciplinary core teams working toward solutions of bioenergy-related problems that integrate technological, agroenvironmental, and socioeconomical issues. This mode of multidisciplinary interaction is central to the IGERT program. This IGERT team has created a highly integrated network of researchers focusing on the complex issues of sustainable bioenergy production.
Every student in the program will receive a $30,000 annual stipend plus a $10,500 annual cost-of-education allowance which covers tuition, fees and health insurance, as well as international travel and travel to professional conferences.

Organized IGERT opportunities include:
· Mentoring of UG research students
· International travel and study
· Presentations at local, national, and international conferences
· Field experiences to learn about the aspects of biorefining which may be unknown to you
· Specialized topical courses
· And more

NE PhD Graduate wins Best Paper Award at 2011 COMSOL Multiphysics Conference

The premier event for multiphysics modeling and simulations based on the COMSOL software package is currently being held in Newton, Mass. Approximately 100 user presentations were selected out of a large pool of entries submitted from all over the world. The conference proceedings CD is expected to reach more than 100,000 individuals.

Dr. David Chandler, who recently completed his Ph.D. degree in nuclear engineering at UT in August of this year, submitted a paper based on his dissertation work for consideration at this conference. His paper was accepted for a presentation and was actually selected as one of the three “best papers” to be honored at this year’s conference. His paper, “COMSOL-based Nuclear Reactor Kinetics Studies at the High Flux Isotope Reactor” was co-authored with his Ph.D. advisor, Dr. G. Ivan Maldonado, and two of his technical mentors; Dr. James D. Freels (ORNL) and Mr. R. Trent Primm, III (retired from ORNL and currently with Primm Consulting, LLC).

The subject of the article explores the computational ability to accurately predict the dynamic behavior of a nuclear reactor core in response to reactivity-induced perturbations. Space-time and point kinetics methodologies were developed for the purpose of studying the transient-induced behavior of the ORNL’s High Flux Isotope Reactor's (HFIR) compact core. The space-time simulations employed the three-energy-group neutron diffusion equations, and the basic nuclear data required was obtained from neutron transport codes (SCALE & MCNP). The neutron diffusion equations, delayed neutron precursor equations, domain movement expressions, etc., were coded into COMSOL via the coefficient form PDE application mode, the ODE application mode, and algebraic equations. Transients initiated by control cylinder and hydraulic tube rabbit ejections were studied.
Shortly after graduation, Chandler accepted a staff position with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he will continue to work in areas related to the analysis and simulation of the HFIR reactor core.

The Boyd Venture Fund Seeking Applications for Seed-Funding Grants

The Boyd Venture Fund, administered by the Anderson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, College of Business Administration, is soliciting applications from student companies to participate in its semi-annual seed-funding grant program.

All University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), students, regardless of academic discipline or degree program (doctoral, masters, or undergraduate) are eligible to apply.

To qualify for the grant money, each business must be legally established (federal tax ID, state business license, LLC, etc). The student owners must be enrolled in a UTK degree program at the time of application. However, meeting with the grant-evaluation committee after graduation is acceptable.

The Anderson Center will work with any business that receives a grant to connect it with a volunteer “mentor,” an experienced individual with interest in the type of business being awarded a grant.

To apply for the grant, the student(s) owner(s) representing the company should submit an executive summary of the business, a pro forma budget, and a “use of funds” statement detailing how the grant funds would be spent to move the business forward. This information should be sent to [log in to unmask] with the subject line, The Boyd Venture Fund.
Deadline for grant-application submissions is Nov. 21. Those businesses invited to “pitch” to the grant-award committee will be notified by Nov. 30 with presentations to the committee scheduled for Friday, Dec. 9. Pitches may be done by Skype, video conferencing, etc. for management teams not on campus.

Up to $20,000 is available to be awarded. The money may be allocated to one company or among several worthy companies. It is not necessary that all available funds be awarded this round. Grant funds will be paid out against invoices.

The grant-award committee will consider:
•	Need for capital
•	Viability of the business concept
•	Growth potential

The Boyd Venture Fund is made possible by the generosity of Randy Boyd, President and CEO of Radio Systems Corporation, makers of PetSafe, Invisible Fence and SportDog brands. Radio Systems is a business built on the knowledge that pets are members of the family. Radio Systems’ 400 worldwide employees produce the industry’s most popular and innovative products in pet training, containment, safety and lifestyle for an audience dear to their hearts - their own pets.

Engineering Professional Practice Student Feature

Featured Student: Phillip Pardue

The featured student this week is Phillip Pardue, an electrical engineering major who has completed his intern assignment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Pardue tells us what his responsiblities and projects were: “I worked in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division in the Modeling and Simulation Group. My responsibility for the course of this internship was to develop a basic model of the Light Armored Vehicle (LAV) drive train for the purposes of torque, speed, gear mesh frequency, bearing frequency and critical speeds.”

Although Pardue experienced some challenges, he learned ways to best solve the problems.

“In building my model, I was tasked with things I had never studied, such as torque transfer, non-contact instrumentation techniques and mechanical design," Pardue said. "From this, I learned that the best way to solve a problem is to know the person who will have an answer for you. I discovered many of the people who specialize in the work I was doing, and they taught me what I needed to know to do the job.”

He said the most valuable benefit from his internship was a "view into how engineering is actually conducted in a professional environment and how it differs from my previous, quasi-engineering work.”

Students may read more about their peers’ co-op/internship experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work – In Their Own Words.”

Environmental Literacy for Attaining a Sustainable Society
---After the gigantic disaster of JAPAN---

Abstract: Today, we say that the challenges of environmental issues we face are real. They are serious, and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, they will be met. We have to restore science to its rightful place wield technology’s wonders to solve environmental problems. We should harness the sun, the winds, the waves and the tides.

Only knowledge on environmental literacy and its implementation in various parts of the globe can enable our community of the world to ultimately get an environmentally hazard-free world with sustainable development.

In this talk, some drawbacks of modern science are illustrated and the strategies are proposed to promote environmental scientific literacy to attain sustainable development across the world.

Biography: Dr. Makoto Kano is the past department head and dean of students at Tokyo University of Science, chairman of Region 13 of Physical Society of Japan and director of Kanto Branch of Japan Institute of Metals. He has 52 refereed publications, has been the author or co-author of five books and two translations and is the director of Earth Systems Ryokuin-juku. He is also a member of the Advisory Committee of Sanyo-Onoda City, Yamaguchi, Japan.
