Engineering Professional Practice Student Feature

Featured Student: Cameron DeClerk

This week’s featured student is Cameron DeClerk, a mechanical engineering major who completed his co-op assignment at Altec Industries, Inc., located in Burnsville, N.C.

DeClerk tells us what department he worked in and what his responsibilities and projects were: “I worked in the design department of the company. In the design department, I used Solidworks to create 3D models of bodies ordered. The bodies I designed were to customer specs and then would be built and shipped to our final assembly plant where they would mount them onto the truck chassis and then sent to the customer.”

The biggest challenge that he had to overcome during his co-op was learning how to use Solidworks. "Before this co-op, I had no knowledge of Solidworks and was expected to pick up fast. I just kept trying new things and eventually got the hang of it. The key lesson I learned was to not get stressed out when thrown into stressful situations because it takes away from the task at hand.”

DeClerk values what he learned from his coworkers.

"Not only was it information pertaining to the job and the tasks at hand, but also information about life that they had learned through experience and wanted to make sure that I was prepared for all the little things that were bound to happen to me in the future.”

Students may read more about their peers’ co-op/internship experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work – In Their Own Words.”

For information on engineering co-op and internships, contact Engineering Professional Practice at [log in to unmask] or 865-974-5323.

Novel Mechanisms for Homogeneous Nucleation in Titanium Alloys

Abstract: During the recent past, an activity of CAMM has been focused on the development of integrated computational materials science and engineering for application to Titanium alloys. Specifically, the aim has been to develop new computationally-based research tools for the prediction of the interrelationship between microstructure and properties in these materials. This presentation will begin with a description of progress made in this endeavor. To make modeling tools physically relevant, it is necessary that accurate mechanistic details be incorporated in the models. This requires very accurate characterization of materials, increasingly being done directly in 3-D. Progress in this type of characterization will be described. Regarding microstructural evolution of Ti alloys, it is necessary that the mechanisms of nucleation of the a-phase from b-titanium be modeled accurately. These mechanisms are largely unknown, and consequently a major research thrust has been established to determine and characterize these nucleation mechanisms. The work has largely involved the application of aberration-corrected (scanning) transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography, to reveal structural and compositional details. The various results obtained and new insights developed will be presented.

Biography: Dr. Fraser has an active research program in the development of new and improved materials, including advanced materials characterization, direct 3-D microstructural representation, modeling microstructure/properties in light alloys, with an emphasis at present on Ti alloys, development of creep resistant beta-Ti alloys, development of low modulus beta-Ti alloys for orthopedic implants, powder metallurgy, including LENS™ and Kinetic Metallization processing. He is a fellow of TMS, ASM and IOM3 (UK). He has published over 330 papers in scholarly journals, given over 240 invited presentations and is involved with the development of several patents on new materials. He has graduated 41 doctoral students and 33 masters students.
