"Nukes & Faith: Discussing religion’s role in nuclear security and energy"
Since the beginning of recorded history, humankind has sought to wage war, often in the name of religion. Nuclear weapons enable these conflicts to be more destructive than ever. But the role of nuclear weapons, through a religious lens,
is up for debate: are religious traditions fanning the flames of a nuclear catastrophe, or do they advocate nuclear nonproliferation?
If faith-based philosophy is a productive tool in dialogues about nuclear arms reduction, do secular governments have the ability to bring these ideas to a discussion? What do religious traditions have to say about peaceful uses of nuclear
technology?
Come for a provocative and unique discussion offering views on nuclear weapons and energy through technical, political, Evangelical Christian, and Unitarian Universalist perspectives.
The panel:
Howard Hall, Governor's Chair Professor of Nuclear Engineering
Brandon Prins: Associate Professor of Political Science
Sherrell Greene: Independent Nuclear Energy Consultant
Jeffrey Kovac: Professor of Chemistry
Sponsored by:
The Institute of Nuclear Materials Management, UT Religious Studies Association, Tyson House Episcopal & Lutheran Campus Ministry and the Howard Baker Center for Public Policy
