The National Library of Medicine has an opening for a GS 9/11 Librarian on the MedlinePlus.gov team.  Please note that the application period is very short – opens tomorrow and closes on Monday. The GS 9/11 Librarian position is an excellent, career-broadening opportunity to work at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), the world’s largest medical library.  NLM holds a collection of more than 7 million items.  The library also conducts research in biomedical communications, creates databases and search tools, and supports a nationwide network of medical libraries.  The library's Web-based databases are the world's most-consulted medical information resources for scientists, health professionals, and the public. 

 

The Librarian serves on the team that manages the daily operations of MedlinePlus.gov in the Health Information Products Unit of the Reference and Web Services section (RWS).  RWS is part of the Public Services Division (PSD) of NLM’s Division of Library Operations.  The staff of the Reference and Web Services section is creative, energetic and forward-thinking.  We are committed to providing high quality health information, reference and customer service.

 

MedlinePlus.gov is the National Institutes of Health's Web site for patients and their families and friends.  Produced by the National Library of Medicine, MedlinePlus offers users information about diseases, conditions, and wellness issues.  MedlinePlus is available in English and Spanish and it’s optimized for mobile at m.medlineplus.gov

 

The Librarian will perform content management, technical and research tasks.  Duties may include updating pages on MedlinePlus.gov and selecting content for display, defining and testing enhancements to the MedlinePlus public pages or the content management system, performing quality control of licensed content, and conducting research to support the maintenance and development of the MedlinePlus vocabulary.

 

Successful candidates will have an advanced degree in library/information science or professional-level experience in medical libraries, or with medical terminology or consumer health information.  Successful candidates will also have experience with Web content management.  They will have a high degree of skill working with databases and spreadsheets and strong communication skills.  Successful candidates must demonstrate experience working with different stakeholders, including managers, programmers, and end-users.
