Director of the School of Library and Information Science

(Associate or Full Professor)

 

The University of Iowa invites applications for the position of Director of the School of Library and Information Science. This is a tenure track position at the level of Professor or Associate Professor, depending on experience. The School offers an ALA-accredited M.A. in Library and Information Science delivered by a dynamic and diverse faculty in a collegial and collaborative department. The incoming director will guide the faculty in developing a vision for the School’s future. The position requires strong leadership abilities, excellent communication skills and a solid understanding of the field of library and information science.

 

Besides serving its core mission of training librarians and information professionals, the School’s strengths allow faculty to engage in a variety of interdisciplinary projects and partnerships, including the UI Center for the book, the Project on the Rhetoric of Inquiry, the Virtual Writing University, and the UI Libraries. The director will also help connect the School to a new campus initiative, Public Humanities in a Digital World and to develop new grant-supported projects. Recent grants totaling nearly $2 million have made possible new work in digital librarianship and school media.

 

The School is physically located in the UI Main Library and the director reports to the Dean of the Graduate College. It is fully ALA accredited until 2016. Additional information about the School can be found at http://slis.uiowa.edu.

The position requires an earned Ph.D. in Library and Information Science or a related field, and an established record of scholarship qualifying for a tenured appointment at a research extensive university. The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate job-related experience with and commitment to diversity in the workplace and academic environments. Salary is highly competitive, and with rank, will be commensurate with qualifications.

 

The University of Iowa is located in Iowa City, a cosmopolitan community of 80,000 with excellent public schools, affordable housing, a world-class medical center, and exceptional cultural and recreational activities.
