UW-Milwaukee, SOIS Welcomes New Faculty
The School of Information Studies (SOIS) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) welcomes four new faculty members beginning the fall semester of 2011.
Dr. Kim Anderson, Assistant Professor
Dr. Anderson, a winner of a 2010-2011 Eugene Garfield Dissertation Fellowship from Beta Phi Mu, recently received her PHD from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Her research interests include appraisal and archivists, sociolculutral aspects of records and record keeping, and library and information science pedagogy. For her dissertation, Dr. Anderson examined how archivists learn to appraise through social interaction. She is also the chair of the Appraisal and Acquisitions section of the Society of American Archivists. Dr. Anderson will further enhance the school’s reputation as a leader in Archival Studies.
Dr. Rakesh Babu, Assistant Professor
Dr. Babu received his PHD in Information Systems from the University of Greensborough, North Carolina. His dissertation focused on usability problems that the blind face in web-enhanced environments, specifically on web environments used in the educational system. A winner of multiple grants, including one from the National Science Foundation, Dr. Babu’s research interests also include finding solutions for making the web more usable for those who are blind, while at the same time developing training programs for the visually impaired so they can better participate in the education system.
Dr. Jessica Moyer, Assistant Professor
In May 2011, Dr. Moyer was awarded her PHD in Literary Education from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Dr. Moyer’s research interests include adult and teen leisure reading, and she is the author of Research-Based Readers’ Advisory and also The Readers’ Advisory Handbook. Dr. Moyer was named one of Library Journal’s “Movers and Shakers” in 2008. In addition, she was awarded an Alumni Leadership Award in 2010 from the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science.
Dr. Wilhelm Peekhaus,
Assistant Professor
Dr. Peekhaus completed his PHD at the University of Western Ontario in 2008.
His dissertation titled “Canada’s Biotechnology Strategy; Struggles on the
Knowledge Commons” focused on the biotechnology agriculture industry in Canada
from a Marxist perspective. Dr. Peekhaus has continued with his research
interests in the biotechnology industry. Prior to joining the SOIS faculty he
was a postdoctoral fellow with the Center for Information Policy Research
(CIPR) at SOIS.
