CTR Faculty Member Testifies Before Congress at Hearing
Dr. Larry Bray with the Center for Transportation Research (CTR) was called as an expert witness to testify before Congress at a hearing titled, The Economic Importance and Financial Challenges of Recapitalizing the Nation's Inland Waterways Transportation System. During the hearing, President of the Waterways Council, Inc. Mike Toohey said they rely and build upon Bray's scholarly research in commercial inland navigation and use it as their justification to request recapitalization of his transport system. UTSI Faculty Member Joins MABE Department
Dr. Jackie Johnson, University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) associate professor, recently joined the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering (MABE) on Aug. 1. Johnson completed her Ph.D. in solid state physics in the research area of magnetic phase transitions in single crystals using Mossbauer Spectroscopy at the University of Liverpool in 1985. After working as a professor at Liverpool John Moores University in science pertaining to buildings, she joined the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source Division jointly with the Materials Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory in the U.S. At Argonne, her research moved from the crystalline state to the amorphous state in studying the structure of glasses. After a 2-year period in administration, she returned to research to develop a new mammography system using a glass-ceramic plate. In 2007, Johnson returned to academia at UTSI and continues to synthesize and characterize amorphous materials pertaining to medical devices.

Engineering Professional Practice Student Feature
Featured Student: Matthew Price
Our featured student this week is Matthew (Matt) Price, a mechanical engineering major who just completed his summer co-op at Carlisle Tire and Wheel, located in Clinton, Tenn.
Price described the department he worked in and what his responsibilities and projects were in relation to the department's operations: “I worked throughout the research and development department (R&D) for Carlisle Tire and Wheel (a subsidiary of Carlisle Companies), but more specifically and commonly within the high speed trailer and outdoor power equipment tire segments. As part of the R&D department, I also worked extensively with people within the new Jackson, Tenn. production facility where the R&D offices are located.
"Carlisle’s tire tread spec system was, at times, inconsistent with CAD drawings elsewhere in our system," Price said. "My job was to find which specs were the most important to the company, and then update them accordingly. Throughout this project, I was constantly looking through AutoCAD drawings in addition to unfamiliar company-specific spec programs. I also used Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access to present my information.”
Price said the most valuable benefit he received by accepting this co-op involved decision-making.
“I liked making decisions and having control over projects, something that I’ve never been able to do at other jobs," Price said. "This gave me a working confidence that I can use on other projects and jobs in the future.”
Students may read more about their peers’ co-op/internship experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work – In Their Own Words.”

Advanced Surface Treatments and Coatings for Improving Tribological Properties
Materials Science and Technology Division
Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Surface treatments and coatings have long been recognized as effective methods to control friction and wear. Varying in layer thickness, composition and microstructure, they can be applied by a wide array of processes and to numerous kinds of substrates. Four types of advanced surface treatments and coatings, suitable for use with ferrous and non-ferrous lightweight alloys, were recently investigated in our laboratory. Two of these were developed by our research partners, and two were developed in-house. They are: (1) forming a high-strength, wear-resistant nanocomposite on aluminum using friction stir-processing, (2) applying an oxygen-diffusion process to improve friction and wear characteristics of titanium alloys, (3) applying a low-temperature carburization process to austenitic stainless steels to enhance their wear-resistance without sacrificing corrosion-resistance, and (4) using physical vapor deposition or laser pulse deposition to produce high-hardness, AlMgB14–TiB2 nanocomposite coatings. The methods of engineering these beneficial surface treatments will be described, and their tribological characteristics will be reviewed.
Biography: Dr. Jun Qu is currently an R&D staff scientist in the Materials Science and Technology Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He earned his Ph.D. (2002) and M.S. (1999) from North Carolina State University and Iowa State University, respectively, with a major in mechanical engineering and a minor in electrical engineering. Qu’s present research interests are in two areas: (1) tribology including advanced material, surface engineering and lubrication, and (2) nanostructured energy materials. He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed journal papers and holds eight U.S. patents or patent applications. Qu received the Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) in 2009. He currently serves in the Steering Committee for Wear of Materials and is a technical editor for the Tribology & Lubrication Technology magazine.
