Two Students Share Study Abroad Stories

Catherine Julson, a senior in industrial engineering, and John Scobey, a junior in civil engineering, have returned home from their study abroad experiences in France and Spain, respectively. Julson studied abroad in France for six weeks through the IPL International Summer School, and Scobey studied Spanish language and culture in Madrid, Spain. Office of Research to Host Presentation by Lieutenant General Patrick O’Reilly

The Office of Research is hosting a presentation by Lieutenant General Patrick O’Reilly, director of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), to students and faculty on Monday, September 19, 2011, from 2:30-3:20 p.m. in Dougherty Engineering Building, Room 612. The presentation will focus on MDA’s mission and career opportunities.

As director of MDA, Lt. Gen. O’Reilly oversees the agency’s worldwide mission to develop a capability to defend against ballistic missile attacks. During his career, he served in both command and staff officer positions in a variety of operational units, including the 1st Cavalry Division, and as an assistant professor of physics at the United States Military Academy. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and has an M.S. degree in Physics, National Security and Strategic Studies and Business.

The MDA is a research, development and acquisition agency within the Department of Defense. MDA seeks to develop, test and field an integrated ballistic missile defense system that protects the U.S., our forward deployed forces and our friends and allies from hostile ballistic missile attack. Apply to be Part of the Emerging Leader Class

The Office of Student Orientation & Leadership Development (SOLD) is now accepting applications from qualified sophomore and junior student leaders for its 2012 Emerging Leaders Class! 
 
Emerging Leaders is a three credit-hour leadership course (credit/no credit) taught every spring for a select group of sophomores and juniors interested in studying leaders, leadership theories and the application of leadership in a variety of situations. The Emerging Leaders Class will meet throughout Spring 2012 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:10 a.m. - 12:25 p.m. 

The Emerging Leaders course offers students the opportunity to:
• Network with other leaders and administrators across campus
• Participate in an off-campus leadership experience (past trips have included Florida,    Washington, D.C., Auburn University, and The University of South Carolina)
• Discover your distinctive leadership style
• Join a cadre of specialized and distinguished UT students

Laboratory in John Tickle Engineering Building Named After CEE Professor

In recognition of several generous gifts from alumni and friends, in support of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Endowment for Excellence, the Hardened Concrete Laboratory in the future John Tickle Engineering Building will be named in honor of Dr. Ed Burdette, Fred N. Peebles Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

CEE Professors Awarded a U.S. Patent

Drs. Baoshan Huang and Xiang Shu of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering were recently awarded a U.S. patent entitled “Rubber-Modified Cementitious Substance and Method Making the Same” (US Patent #7985786, July 26, 2011). Conventional rubber-modified concrete lacks a strong chemical bonding and compatibility in modulus between rubber particles and surrounding cement mortar, which results in a significant reduction in strength. Huang and Shu’s method, namely “two-staged surface treatment," improved both the chemical bond and the modulus compatibility, and consequently significantly improved the performance of rubber-modified concrete. Another inventor of the patent is Dr. Jingyao Cao, a former post-doctoral research associate under the supervision of Huang. Huang and his team also filed another provisional patent entitled “A Novel Testing and Analysis System for Loaded Wheel Tester (LWT)” (inventors: Drs. Baoshan Huang, Xiang Shu and Hao Wu).

Diamond-coated Cutting Tool Research at The University of Alabama

Chemical-vapor-deposition grown diamond has a potential to replace costly polycrystalline diamond tools for advanced machining applications. Despite diamond coating’s superior tribological properties, the practical applications of diamond coating on cutting tools, however, remain limited by several technological challenges including adhesion strengths, residual stresses and tool geometry design. Coating delamination is the major life-limiting factor to diamond coated carbide tools in machining. The interface failure results from insufficient adhesion, deposition stresses and machining loads. Moreover, diamond coated tool behaviors are influenced by both the coating and the subsequent machining process, and the tool edge geometry strongly impacts the stress fields around the cutting edge during each process.

His group has studied diamond-coated tools for about six years with collaborations with industries, national labs, and other universities, to investigate several critical aspects of diamond-coated cutting tools. In this presentation, methodologies undertaken and results from recent studies will be discussed:
(1) Diamond coated tool fabrications and characterizations,
(2) Diamond coated tool performance with the edge radius effects,
(3) Cutting simulations with a diamond-coated tool including deposition residual stresses, and
(4) Adhesion characterizations and interface behavior modeling.

Biography: Dr. Kevin Chou is a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at The University of Alabama (UA). He is also a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Alabama. He received his Ph.D. in industrial engineering from Purdue University. Chou’s research/teaching interests include design and manufacturing, CAD/CAM, mechanics, tribology and materials. His current research areas include diamond-coated cutting tools, electron beam additive fabrication technology, nanotechnology enabled prosthesis supported by NSF, NASA, NIH as well as industry. His research group has published over 75 refereed articles and delivered over 60 presentations in national and international conferences. Chou is also an active member of ASME, SME and ASM-International.

Tuning the Electronic and Chemical Properties of MetalNanoparticle Dimers by Modifying Their Electronic Coupling

A fundamental challenge in the field of nanotechnology is tuning the properties of nanoparticles. In particular, controlling the ability of metal nanoparticle aggregates to bind molecular species is key to tuning their catalytic activity. Although several variables have been explored to achieve this goal, none have provided a way of modifying their chemical reactivity in real time. Based on density functional theory calculations, we show that the binding energies of molecular species on metal nanoparticle dimers can be readily tuned by varying the electronic coupling between the nanoparticles. The changes in the electronic coupling can be achieved by either varying the inter-particle separation or, for a fixed inter-particle separation, by applying modest values of an electric field. We show that by applying an electric field to a weakly coupled dimer the binding energies of an oxygen molecule can be driven from negative to positive values. Our findings point to novel ways of tuning the chemical reactivity of metal nanoparticle aggregates, which will enable the dynamic control of chemical reactions.

Biography: Dr. Claudia Troparevsky got her Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from University of Minnesota in 2003. Since then, she has worked in a number of research groups at the Materials Science and Technology Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Her recent and past work deals primarily with the theoretical modeling of the electronic, optical and chemical properties of metal and semiconducting nanoparticles. She has published about 15 papers and given numerous professional presentations. She is now a research assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at UT, while still having a strong collaborative effort with the Materials Theory Group of ORNL.
