Student@Tennessee, Monday, Aug 22, 2011 Newsletter for UT Knoxville Students ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Special --- Welcome Week --- Members of the class of 2015 had the chance to experience beloved University of Tennessee traditions their first week on campus. Dozens spray-painted their names on the Rock, a megaton chunk of dolomite, as part of the festivities. They also ran through the T at Neyland Stadium and paused for a photo-op on the turf. http://www.utk.edu/tntoday/2011/08/19/freshmen-traditions/ --- Next month marks the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, DC. The UT Knoxville Office of Media Relations is looking for UT students who were 10-12 years old in 2001 who would like to share their thoughts about how the events of 9/11 affected them and changed or shaped their thinking. This week the UT Culinary Institute will offer a special 'welcome back meal' for five dollars. Mondays feature a bowling league and tournaments for billiards, table tennis, chess, poker, spades and more. Tuesdays feature intramural and residence hall bowling leagues and a free poker night. On Wednesdays, join the Bowling Club, learn how to play pool for free, or win prizes in the neon bowling competition. On Thursdays, join in the Xbox 360 tournaments and three hours of unlimited bowling, billiards, or table tennis play for only $3. Visit http://universitycenter.utk.edu/downunder for more information on any activity. --- A celebration of the life of Roger Stephens, director of the UT School of Music, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 6, in the Cox Auditorium of the Alumni Memorial Building. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to the tribute, which will include remembrances and musical reflections. The Equestrian Club has both a recreational and a competitive program. Recreational riders take trail rides through the mountains each week while improving their riding. On the competitive team, riders of all levels can compete against other colleges in hunt seat, western or both. Questions? E-mail [log in to unmask] --- The Volunteer Challenge program run by All Campus Events (ACE) pairs UT student organizations with local Knoxville agencies to provide a week-long community service experience full of "Volunteer" spirit. In the past, students have done light landscaping, painting, minor construction, and additional service for agencies throughout Knoxville. Student organizations can benefit a local non-profit agency by contributing time during Volunteer Challenge to complete a variety of projects for the agency. Vol Challenge will be held from Monday, Sept. 12, to Friday, Sept. 16. The first interest meeting will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 23 in UC room 225. --- The TeamVOLS Volunteer Center is accepting applications for the annual Alternative Fall Break trips. If you are interested in spending your Fall Break serving others in communities outside of Knoxville, apply today! Applications are available online (http://activities.utk.edu) until Fri. You may submit your favorite photo for each of two categories. The first category is the UT student category and pictures submitted for this category must include at least one identifiable UT student. The second category is the general photography category allowing you to submit your favorite scenic or landscape photo from your study abroad experience.
