ONLINE WEEKEND LEARNING (OWL) - SLIS will launch this new program in Fall 2011. OWL blends four face-to-face Saturday class meetings with online learning.

HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (HIT) - SLIS is recruiting new students for the Master of Science in Information Technology, with a concentration in Health Information Technology program. STUDENT AND ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENTS

2010-2011 ROVELSTAD SCHOLARS SELECTED - Mr. Trevor Riley and Ms. Rose Asuquo have been selected as the Rovelstad Scholars to receive the 2011-2012 Howard and Mathilde Rovelstad Scholarships. The late Mathilde Rovelstad, a professor of library and information science who taught at Catholic University for 30 years, left a bequest in her estate to add to the largest scholarship in the history of CUA's School of Library and Information Science.

SLIS STUDENT ALA SPECTRUM SCHOLARS - Ana Elisa de Campos Salles, an incoming student, has been awarded a Spectrum Scholarship by the American Library Association, and the School of Library and Information Science at The Catholic University of America has awarded Ms. de Campos Salles a matching scholarship. The University and the School are committed to educating a new generation of culturally diverse librarians and proud to support Ms. De Campos Salles and the ALA Spectrum Program.  

SLIS ALUMNA ROY M. MERSKY SPIRIT OF LAW LIBRIANSHIP AWARDEE - Sara Sonet, SLIS alumna and research librarian at the U.S. Supreme Court Law Library, is this year's Roy M. Mersky Spirit of Law Librarianship Award winner. Sonet's 12 years of service to the Washington Special Hockey program has enriched the lives of many children and adults with special needs and has helped the program grow into one of the finest in the nation.

SLIS STUDENT NAMED ONE OF LIBRARY JOURNAL'S 2011 MOVERS & SHAKERS - SLIS student, Rebecca Renard was named one of Library Journal's 2011 Movers & Shakers for her work with teenagers at the District of Columbia Public Libraries.

SLIS STUDENTS DLCA RUTH FINE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS - Congratulations to Rebecca Renard and Christian Minter for winning this year's Ruth Fine Memorial Scholarships from the DC Library Association.

SLIS 2010 GRADUATE OF THE YEAR - Michele Polchow was named the 2010 Graduate of the Year. She received this award at the SLIS commencement on May 14.


FACULTY NEWS

DR. RENATE CHANCELLOR has an article in press, "Transformative Leadership: E.J. Josey and the Modern Library Profession," in the Journal of History and Culture. She was also an invited speaker on "Information Literacy in the 21st Century " at the U. S. Department of State U.S. Department of State Single Country Project: from Russia on June 13. Dr. Chancellor also attended the 2011 Summer Institute of Catholic Social Thought from June 6-10, 2011 and was an invited guest to the Justice Stephens Wickersham Awards Luncheon at the Library of Congress on June 12. 

DR. INGRID HSIEH-YEE attended the seventh Annual IAFIE Conference, Current Challenges and the State of Intelligence Education, June 6-9, 2011, at Johns Hopkins University, Washington, D.C. and the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIP) and National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA) meeting, July 19-21, in Washington, D.C. The theme of the meeting is Make It Work: Improvisations on the stewardship of digital information.

DR. HSIEH-YEE will present at two panel sessions at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, Oct. 9-12, in New Orleans, LA. The theme of the conference is Bridging the Gulf: Communication and Information in Society, Technology, and Work. Dr. Hsieh-Yee will present on "Emerging Trends in Knowledge Organization and Information Organization Course Curriculum" and "Preparing for the Academic Job Market: An Interactive Panel for Doctoral Students." 

DR. Bill KULES has had two papers accepted:
o Kules, B., Xie, B. "Older adults searching for health information in MedlinePlus - An exploratory study of faceted online search interfaces".  To be presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIST 2011). 
o Kelley McGrath, Bill Kules, Chris Fitzpatrick (2011). FRBR and facets provide flexible, work-centric access to items in library collections. In Proceedings of JCDL 2011 (Ottawa, CA, June 13-17, 2011): 49-52. 

DR. KULES AND JOAN WEEKS are teaching a faculty development seminar, Practical Online Pedagogy, this summer which helps CUA instructors prepare to teach online. This seminar has participants from STRS, Nursing, Psychology, CPIT, and other units around campus.

Mr. DAVID SHUMAKER published two articles this summer: 
o "Beyond Instruction: Creating New Roles for Embedded Librarians." In Calkins, K. & Kvenild, C. eds., Embedded Librarians: Moving Beyond One-Shot Instruction. Chicago: Association of College & Research Libraries, p. 17-30. 
o Succeeding with Embedded Librarianship. Information Outlook, 15(4), 30-32. 

Mr. SHUMAKER participated in a panel presentation for the Special Libraries Association, Military Librarians Division at the SLA Annual Conference in Philadelphia, PA on June 13. His presentation was "Embedded Librarians: Becoming Force Multipliers, Revolutionizing Libraries." 

DR. JANE ZHANG presented two conference papers this summer: "Original Order in Digital Archives: Definitions, Purposes, and Representations" was presented on June 2 in Toronto at the Annual Conference of the Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA). "Electronic Records Management: An Evolving Teaching Discipline" was presented on July 11 in Boston at the third Archival Education and Research Institute (AERI).
