Online@UT/Banner Integration
You may have noticed that your fall semester courses are available in [log in to unmask] This semester, we started processing instructor of record data from Banner. As a result, you will no longer have to activate your course sites using the Online@UT course activation form. We are still working through a few issues related to GTA course assignment. For this semester, GTAs should complete a Help ticket at http://online.utk.edu/contact in order to be attached to a specific class or lab. We hope you find this new integration helpful to you.

Blitz Prepares Faculty for Implementing Technology
At the beginning of each semester, OIT offers a "blitz" of hands-on workshops to prepare faculty to use certain technologies in the classroom. Two workshops in particular feature: the equipment available in the OIT-sponsored Technology Enhanced Classrooms across campus, and the use of personal response devices, or clicker technology. These workshops are scheduled daily for 7-10 days prior to the start of class to provide the introductory or refresher assistance faculty may need to use these technologies successfully.

Technology Enhanced Classroom
If you are teaching in a Technology Enhanced Classroom (TEC) this fall--especially for the first time--be sure to take advantage of our brief training sessions. (See schedule and a link to register at right.) To schedule a one-on-one session at another time contact the HelpDesk at http://help.utk.edu or 974-9900.

Several new TEC spaces are on schedule for completion by the beginning of fall semester. For a full list of available classrooms, visit the updated Classroom Equipment Search page after August 15. For more information or to register for our TEC workshops, visit the ITC workshops page.

Clicker Technology
Clicker Technology enhances student engagement. It also helps students "stay focused," according to a comment made in Lecturer, Malissa Peery's mathematics class. Additional benefits include:

  • Increased attendance
  • Immediate feedback
  • Peer instruction
  • Just-in-time instruction

UT's clicker technology vendor is Turning Technologies. OIt provides workshops on the general and advanced uses of clicker technology for student engagement. All faculty interested in using clickers are encouraged to attend.

For more information or to register for these or other clicker technology sessions, visit the ITC workshops page or contact Christina Goode at [log in to unmask] or call 974-6470.

GTA@OIT Fall Call for Proposals
Each fall and spring semester, Graduate Teaching Associates and Assistants (GTAs) with sole responsibility for teaching a course are invited to submit a proposal for the GTA@OIT Grant. In addition to mentoring, grant recipients receive $500 to purchase software, attend a professional conference, prepare a professional presentation or publication about integrating technology into a course, or use as a stipend.

To learn more about the GTA@OIT Fall Call for Proposals, visit http://itc.utk.edu/services/gta/. The deadline is 5 p.m., September 9. For more information email Dr. Christina Goode at [log in to unmask] or call 974-6470.

Summer Teaching Institute to Enhance Future Courses
Example site
Many students may gain an improved educational experience this fall as faculty begin to implement various new-found skills and strategies into their courses. UT's Summer Teaching Institute offered a unique opportunity for tenured and tenure-track faculty, adjunct faculty, lecturers, and graduate teaching assistants to receive authentic, hands-on learning experience and guidance in designing and developing exemplary courses in one of three delivery formats: face-to-face, blended or hybrid, and online. Faculty developed creative and informative lessons, with and without technology, to stimulate learning and to help their students become more engaged with the course content.
