LIBRARY DIRECTOR – E.G. FISHER PUBLIC LIBRARY, ATHENS, TN

The McMinn County Library Board seeks a Library Director who is experienced, enthusiastic, innovative and very public service oriented. The Director oversees a staff of 7 FTEs, a collection of 90,000 items, and an annual budget of $331,000.
    The library, a 14,000 sq. ft. facility opened in 1997, is one of five independent public libraries in McMinn County, with a service population of 45,663 (Level 4 Library).

The Director reports to a nine member Board of Trustees and is responsible for:
Ø Planning and directing the overall operations and management of the Library;
Ø Implementing the mission, vision and goals of the library as set by the Library Board:
Ø Working with the Library Advisory Committee to review and resolve library issues before making recommendations to the Board;
Ø Working with the other public libraries & cities in the county to prepare the needed reports for the Library Board and the funding governing bodies.

Essential duties include:
Ø Ensuring a high level of customer service;
Ø Preparing an annual budget for approval by the Board;
Ø Directing the expenditure of Library funds;
Ø Effectively leading and supervising staff and volunteers;
Ø Maintaining effective working relationships with various agencies and community groups, including Fort Loudoun Regional Library and Friends of E.G. Fisher Public Library;
Ø Seeking additional funding support from the community and beyond;
Ø Working with city and county leaders in the interest of the library.

Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include three years of progressively responsible library leadership; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; experience in providing sound fiscal planning and management, and thorough knowledge of current trends, technology, and best practices for public libraries. Preferred qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program or its equivalent.

Compensation: Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications, with a range of $35,000 to $43,000. Benefit package including health insurance, retirement, vacation and sick leave.

This position is located in the Smithsonian Institution Libraries (SIL).  The employee provides reference assistance to a diverse clientele, assists with outreach projects, and collection maintenance, development, acquisition, circulation and preservation. 

* Provides guidance and access to information resources, both inside the library and beyond the library, through databases, telecommunications networks, and cooperative arrangements.

* Oversees/assists with collection maintenance, inventory, stack maintenance, digitization planning and monitoring, de-accessioning, conservation/housing/labeling, and related projects.   

* Maintains a current knowledge of developments in both relevant subject fields and librarianship through individual study, research, attendance at professional meetings, seminars, conferences, etc.

* Gives instruction to faculty, students, and other clientele on the content, nature and use of library resources, including how to search paper materials and various databases and other electronic media.
