MILLER TO TAKE THE HELM AT US - SLIS ON JULY 1

Dr. Loy Singleton, dean of the College of Communication and Information Sciences at the University of Alabama, announces that Professor Steve Miller, coordinator of the Book Arts MFA Program, will serve as interim director of the School of Library and Information Studies beginning July 1st and continuing until the arrival of the School’s permanent director on August 16th.  Dr. Heidi Julien has been appointed director, commencing in fall term 2011.

Professor Miller, a printer of fine books and renowned book arts educator, is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, which awarded him a distinguished alumni award.  A former president of the University of Alabama’s faculty senate, Professor Miller has served in leadership positions in the book arts community and at the University.  Most recently he chaired the search committee that conducted the year-long international search that resulted in Dr. Julien’s appointment to the directorship.

Professor Miller takes over the leadership of SLIS from Dr. Elizabeth Aversa who has served as director for eight years.  After a sabbatical, Dr. Aversa will return to the faculty in January 2012.
