Research Librarian for the Social Sciences

 

Salary:  $33,000 (3/4 time, approximately 30 hours per week)

 

Rank:  Research Assistant Professor (1 year temporary appointment)

 

Available:  July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012

 

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) Libraries seeks a creative, service-oriented librarian for a 3/4 time, one-year appointment as Research Librarian. Subject liaison responsibilities include research assistance, instruction, and collection management primarily in the Social Sciences. As a member of the Research Services Department in the John C. Hodges Library, the Research Librarian for the Social Sciences contributes to the work of the library as both subject specialist and generalist in a large centralized library. This position offers an excellent opportunity for a new professional to gain academic library experience with a team of dynamic, collegial faculty in the University Libraries.  During this one-year appointment, the Research Librarian for the Social Sciences will work closely with an experienced member of the Research Services Department in a mentoring relationship.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

1.      Develop and deliver library instruction and research support services primarily for the Political Science Department, the Child and Family Studies Department, and the Women’s Studies Department

2.      Provide specialized consultation services for students and faculty

3.      Deliver general reference services, online and in-person including staffing a general research assistance desk

4.      Perform collection development activities primarily for Political Science, Child and Family Studies, and Women’s Studies

5.      Provide general instruction and orientation for lower division undergraduate classes in collaboration the Integrated User Services instruction librarians working through the learning commons

 

Required Qualifications:

ALA accredited master’s degree. Experience or coursework in reference services and a demonstrated interest in instruction.  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills paired with a strong service orientation. Evidence of the ability to work collegially in a team environment as well as independently.

 

Preferred: 

Knowledge of resources in the Social Sciences.  Experience in an academic or special library.
