Fall 2011 Internships

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Library and Archives is
currently accepting applications for internships from graduate
students preparing for careers in libraries and archives. Interns must
schedule their work Monday through Friday during regular business
hours. Interns work under the supervision and guidance of one of the
Rock Hall's librarians and archivists, depending on the nature of the

Internships are offered in the following areas:

Archival Arrangement, Preservation, and Description - Provides the
opportunity to participate in archival processing and preservation
work, such as inventorying, arranging and describing archival
collections, entering data into an archival management system, helping
to create an institutional disaster plan, and performing basic
preservation work on document-based collections.

Cataloging and Metadata - Provides the opportunity to work on projects
to create and enhance bibliographic records in a library catalog
and/or create metadata for digital collections. Such work may entail
assigning subject and name access points, preparing descriptive
summaries, and reviewing catalog records for accuracy.

Collection Development - Provides an opportunity to participate in
collection development activities in a music research library. Such
work includes evaluating current materials and making recommendations
for future additions to the collection. The intern will gain an
understanding of library users' needs, the constraints of physical

space, various resources and tools used in collection development, and
the budgetary considerations required of such decisions.

Digital Projects - Provide the opportunity to work in support of
digitization initiatives to increase access to collections. Potential

Checks library
materials in/out; shelves returned library materials.



Maintains shelving
areas; reads shelves to ensure proper placement.



Receives fine/fee
moneys; issues receipts; accounts for incoming fines/fees.



Issues/processes
library card applications; acquaints new patrons with library and procedure=
s.



Locates materials
requested by patrons; notifies patrons of status of requests.



Assists patrons
with use of library equipment.



Performs tasks
associated with facility opening/closing.



Answers the
telephone; provides information; takes and relays messages and/or directs c=
alls
to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.



Responds to patron
complaints/concerns; attempts to resolve problems.



Responds to routine
requests for information from officials, employees, members of the staff, t=

public or other individuals.



Greets patrons;

<br>The MIT Libraries seek a self=E2=80=90motivated, entrepreneurial indivi=
dual to join the innovative, service=E2=80=90oriented staff of the Institut=
e Archives and Special Collections in support of acquisition, preservation,=
 management, and access to digital collections. The focus of this position =
is a direct outcome of the Institute=E2=80=99s =E2=80=9CDigital MIT=E2=80=
=9D initiative and the Libraries=E2=80=99 strategic direction that prioriti=
zes MIT=E2=80=90produced content, unique material, and born=E2=80=90digital=
 and digitized collections. The Digital Archivist, in collaboration with ot=
her units within the Libraries and the Institute, will define and apply the=
 methodology and standards of archival best practice to born=E2=80=90digita=
l and digitized archival collections. <br>

<br>RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Associate Head, Institute =
Archives and Special Collections, specific responsibilities of the Digital =
Archivist will be to implement processes for effective acquisition, descrip=
tion, access, preservation, and future migration of digital collections acq=
uired by the Archives and to lead the effort in developing policies and tec=
hnical standards for MIT digital content creators. The Digital Archivist wi=
ll work with Archives collections staff in contacting offices, faculty and =
staff regarding archival digital assets of enduring legal, administrative, =
and historical value, and in various formats, e.g., documents, websites, da=
tabases, email. S/he will develop and maintain plans, specifications, proce=
dures and manuals to support the effective collection and management of dig=
ital archival content. S/he will also work with library and Institute staff=
 to define best practices and procedures related to archival digital conten=
t management and i!<br>

 n determining specifications for a digital repository that meets the manag=
ement, access, and preservation needs of archival collections, including ad=
ministrative records. The Digital Archivist will be expected to remain curr=
ent with emerging standards and professional best practices and to particip=
ate in committees and projects within MIT Libraries and beyond. S/he will c=
ontribute to the Archives=E2=80=99 reference and outreach services, particu=
larly related to digital archival materials. <br>

<br>QUALIFICATIONS: Required =E2=80=90 ALA=E2=80=90accredited MLS/MLIS, or =
Masters degree in history or relevant subject/field. Minimum of two years e=
xperience working with the curation of digital content in an archival repos=
itory or library. Demonstrated knowledge of digital archival and records ma=
nagement theory and practice including issues related to intellectual prope=
rty, content management, access, and preservation. Demonstrated knowledge o=
f data storage methods, media and security. Experience with digital reposit=
ory platform(s) and with XML and digital content creation/transformation to=
ols. Demonstrated knowledge of descriptive metadata standards including MAR=
C, DACS, Dublin Core and of data structure standards relevant to archival c=
ontrol of digital collection material (ex. EAD, Dublin Core, MODS, METS, PR=
EMIS, or VRA Core). Experience with relational databases. Excellent analyti=
cal, communication, and interpersonal skills, including commitment to worki=
ng effectively wi!<br>

<br>SALARY AND BENEFITS: $51,000 is minimum entry=E2=80=90level salary. Act=
ual salary and appointment level (Librarian/Archivist I or II) will depend =
