The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) celebrates the history and diversity of
musical instruments from countries and cultures around the world.  The
museum’s new 190,000 square-foot building opened to the public on April 24,
2010 and contains approximately 75,000 square feet of gallery space.


*POSITION DESCRIPTION***


MIM seeks a highly qualified candidate for the new position of Assistant
Registrar of Multi-Media.  The successful candidate will be familiar with
all aspects of registration work and rights and reproduction issues.  This
position has primary responsibility for processing, documenting and managing
the Archives, Audio/Visual collection and Library.  The Assistant Registrar
of Multi-Media is part of a collections management team which cares for all
MIM’s collections and is responsible for the various collections
documentation systems.  This position will report to the Head of
Registration & Collections Management and work closely with staff in MIM
departments, including Conservation, Curatorial, Exhibits & Multi-Media,
Education, and Development & Marketing.



Beyond resume experience, we are looking for a dynamic individual capable of
conceptualizing and initiating a system of organization for our large
collection of ever-changing images.  Further, he or she will possess a
demonstrated track record of excellence in a team-oriented environment;
maintain a keen ability to thoughtfully convey knowledge, passion and ideas
to others.  Ideal candidate will be an extremely organized, proactive and
energetic individual who is willing to relocate to Phoenix, AZ if
necessary.  The Assistant Registrar of Multi-Media is a full-time regular
position and includes benefits.  Salary will be commensurate with
experience.  This is not an entry-level position but rather a senior level
position within the Registration & Collections Management Department.

*PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES ***

   - Acts as primary contact for requests for new collections photography
   and use of collection images internally or externally including requests for
   research, publication and publicity.  Supplies photographic material with
   image and copyright credits.

·        In collaboration with Curators, Multi-Media Manager, Exhibit
Designers and others, obtains images and a/v materials, permissions and
copyright from lenders, consultants and services on behalf of departments
across the MIM.  Tracks licensing restrictions, credit line information and
terms for these materials.

   - Creates and maintains collection records (manual and electronic) for
   multi-media collections including audio/visual, archives, and library.
   These records include acquisition, accession, provenance, location, and
   other data.
   - Coordinates with the Curatorial, Creative and Public Relations
   departments in the use of images within exhibitions and marketing materials.
   - Arranges access to the multi-media collection for MIM staff and
   visiting scholars.  Respond to research inquiries and other requests from
   institutions and the public.
   - Provides strategic overview in managing and developing the Rights &
   Reproductions functions related to MIMs collections.

·        Acts as primary point of contact within MIM on issues relating to
image copyright.

·        Establishes policies and procedures for Audio/Visual collection,
Archives and Library.

·        Establishes policies and procedures for Rights & Reproduction of
MIM owned materials.

   - Maintains “Ready to Use” collections image library in collaboration
   with Curatorial and Creative.
   - Researches and recommends additional systems necessary to track
   multi-media collections including a digital asset management database.
   - Manages the re-housing of the archives collection.

·        Develops archives as a research tool.

·        Organizes system for handling institutional archives.

   - Supervises the work of volunteers and interns.
   - Manages and assists in selected special projects and performs other
   related duties as assigned.

*Qualifications:*

   - M.L.I.S. or M.A. degree in Museum Studies preferred with 3 additional
   years of related experience demonstrating progressively responsible
   positions working with a multi-media collection.
   - 2-3 Years’ experience with digital media required; 4-5 years
   registration experience preferred
   - Advanced knowledge of accepted standards and practices for museum
   registration and collections management, rights and reproduction, as well as
   legal and ethical issues is required.
   - Experience with collections management databases, digital asset
   management systems, cataloging standards, and controlled vocabularies is
   required.  Familiarity with TMS is preferred, but not required.
   - Must be technically literate including experience with collections
   management databases, file naming, online research, and spreadsheets.
   - Ability to solve problems creatively, work independently and excel in a
   high performance, fast-paced, team-oriented culture.
   - Strong writing and collaborative interpersonal skills.
   - Some travel may be required.
   - Ability to lift 50 pounds and climb a step ladder.
   - Valid driver’s license.
