Subject: [DDDHLIST] Elsevier Author Workshop on May 24

Dear Dean, Directors, and Department Heads,

Please share this message with your faculty and students.

The Office of Research will host an Elsevier Author Workshop on Tuesday, May 24, from 1:30-4:00 in room 307, College of Engineering and Science and Engineering Research Building (SERF). Elsevier Author Workshops are aimed at young scientists, including faculty, post-docs, and graduate students, to provide guidelines on how to publish a "world class paper." The workshop will feature presentations by Jenny Henzen, a publisher at Elsevier, along with some journal editors at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. These workshops have been held at universities all over the world, and feedback suggests that participants find them very helpful.

The Author Workshop will provide insider information from the other side of the publishing process and is aimed at scientists in all disciplines and at every stage of their career. Researchers should expect to learn:

* The roles of the publisher and the editor

* The fundamentals of a good paper, including language and structure

* The key factors that get a paper past the first quick editorial review

* Ways to make an editor's and reviewer's jobs easier or more difficult

* Author's responsibilities in ethical publishing

* How to respond to negative reviews

Please see the attached document for additional information.

Best wishes,
Beth
