Wayne State University’s School of Library and Information Science is now accepting applications for Fall 2011 admissions into its new Arts and Museum Librarianship (AML) Graduate Certificate. A signature offering of the School of Library and Information Science, the goal of the Arts/Museum Certificate is to enroll highly-qualified students with a demonstrated interest in the fine or performing arts or museums who are enthused to spend about a year in Detroit focused primarily on this certificate. All students in this certificate will receive in-state tuition even though the classes are campus-based.

Since 2005, the School has received IMLS funding to educate and train 30 students in the unique knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to provide library services in fine and performing arts organizations and museums. As part of this effort, the School established collaborative partnerships with several Detroit-based cultural institutions to provide the students with an integrated practicum experience to complement their Master of Library and Information Science degree studies. Partners include the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Michigan Opera Theater, Motown Historical Museum, and the WSU Libraries. As a result of the enthusiastic response from the students and the partners involved, the School decided to make arts and museum librarianship an ongoing offering by establishing this certificate.

The Graduate Certificate in Arts and Museum Librarianship is targeted toward LIS graduate students wishing to pursue a professional career in fine or performing arts or museum librarianship; practicing library and museum staff who wish to advance their competency in the field of fine and performing arts and museum librarianship; and students from other disciplines and professions who wish to obtain an MLIS with a specialization in arts and museum library management and digital curation skills.

Complete details about the certificate are available on the School’s website: slis.wayne.edu/programs/aml.php
