The Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois is pleased to offer a Library Buildings course this summer.

Are you preparing to build a new library building or remodel an old one? Are you faced with structural problems in your current building? If so LIS 548 Library Buildings, an intensive practical course on the design and construction of library buildings, can provide you with a practical introduction to the design and construction of library buildings. The course places particular emphasis on the problems that occur in the design and construction of libraries and how these can be avoided. The course also includes evaluative walking tours of a number of library buildings, including a two-day field trip by motor coach to visit library buildings in the Chicago area.

Offered in a two week format, LIS 548 meets six hours a day on weekdays from May 31 through June 10, 2011. The course is open for community credit to non-degree students.

The course is taught by Fred Schlipf, who has served as a space programmer and building consultant to about 125 libraries. He has been a member of the GSLIS faculty since 1970, and he spent 32 years as director of The Urbana Free Library.
